My experience playing with Hypertufa extends over many years. I say playing because the creative opportunities are endless. I have made everything from water features to Buddha heads out of Hypertufa. Planters are an excellent introduction to hypertufa as a material, so let’s walk through the steps for making a hypertufa planter from scratch.

What is hypertufa?

Hypertufa is an easy DIY cement mix made with Portland cement that is lighter than traditional cement mixtures. Hypertufa is durable. It can live outdoors and lends itself to either a smooth, polished look or a rough, rustic texture. The secret to the finish is in the mold you use. The secret to living outdoors, at freezing temperatures, is in the ratio of the mix. Hypertufa conforms like clay, can take on many forms and is inexpensive. Here is a wonderful introduction to Portland cement and the possibilities it holds.

Select the hypertufa mold

The mold will determine the final finish and texture of the hypertufa planter in which it is cast. For a smooth, polished appearance, choose a plastic tub with a smooth, shiny finish. If you want a textured look like us, line a plastic tub with a plastic liner. Allow the wrinkles to form in the plastic liner and embed into the wet hypertufa cement.

Mix the hypertufa ingredients

Mix together the dry ingredients: two quarts perlite, two quarts peat moss and two quarts Portland cement. The dry Portland cement and peat moss tend to clump and become difficult to break down when you add water, so sift them through a 1/2-in. steel mesh screen first.

Once sifted, to ensure even distribution of materials, mix the dry material by hand or with a garden shovel to blend well.

two quarts perlite, two quarts peat moss and two quarts Portland cement being mixed together

Slowly add water

Slowly add water as you thoroughly mix the materials. It is important not to overwet the mix. Shoot for a consistency like a thick brownie mix. If you can make a ball out of the mix and it stays in shape, you’ve added the right amount of water.

adding water to dry mixture

Transfer the Hypertufa mix into the plastic tub

Put on a pair of plastic gloves and transfer the hypertufa mix into the plastic-lined tub. Start by building up at least an inch of Hypertufa mix on the bottom of the tub for the base, and work your way up the tub’s sides to create walls at least an inch thick.

Transferring the Hypertufa mix into the plastic tub

Bore out a drain hole

Every planter needs a drain hole to ensure proper drainage and prevent root rot. With a wood dowel or your finger, create a one-inch-ish drain hole in the bottom of the planter. Depending on the size of your planter, you may opt for two holes six to nine inches apart.

Finishing touches

This is the last opportunity to shape and form the wet hypertufa mix. Whatever stage you leave it in now is how it will dry and cure. Be sure to smooth out the top lip of the planter, make sure corners are defined and all four walls are about the same thickness.

adding finishing touches to the wet hypertufa mix

Cure for 24 hours

Fold the plastic liner over the top of the hypertufa and leave it in the mold to cure for 24-hours. If your plastic mold container has a lid, use this as well. The plastic liner and/or lid will prevent moisture from escaping too quickly and slow down drying time. Slowing down the drying time will help prevent the hypertufa from developing cracks and weakening the planter.

placing plastic lid over hypertufa mixture

De-mold and clean up

De-molding is easy when using a non-porous plastic tub like ours. But if you decide to use another porous material (such as wood) in the future, you will want to use a lubricant such as vegetable or olive oil sprayed or brushed on the mold.

When mixing Portland cement with Perlite and peat moss, you may find small loose particles of these elements attached to the outer surface but not fully embedded. To clean loose bits of material, use a wire brush to remove them. This step is more about aesthetics than it is about the durability of the planter. It’s about the look you like.

de-molding the cured mixture and using wire brush to remove loose bits of material

Complete the drying process

Once the planter has been de-molded, it will still not be dry. You will want to continue the slow drying process by wrapping the whole planter in plastic for five to seven days and misting it with water every 24 hours. You will know it is dry when it looks even in color, and no moisture is visible. Moisture can be detected by uneven, darker grey spots in the Hypertufa.

While drying, the drain hole may become glazed over with a thin layer of cement. Use a dowel or screwdriver to clean it out before the drying process.

While drying, the drain hole may become glazed over with a thin layer of cement

Transition to a tub of water

The last step is to ensure your planter is no longer holding the lime from the cement. Lime can mix into your potting soil and hurt your plants. To allow the lime to leach out, submerge the entire planter in a tub of water for seven days.

adding water to tub with planter in it

Remove planter from water, Rinse off and plant

To ensure any remnants of Lime have been removed from the planter, give it a good rinse before adding dirt and planting.

FAQ

What is the difference between concrete and cement?

Concrete is cement with an aggregate of sand and gravel added to it for strength. Cement is just the Portland cement powder. It becomes concrete when you add sand and gravel.

Does Hypertufa work with water for water features?

Yes, Hypertufa is often used for water features and is well-suited to water exposure. If your water feature will be exposed to freezing temperatures, be sure to add sand to the mix to help prevent cracking.

TV Over the Fireplace? How To Do It Without Ruining Your Setup https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-balance-fireplace-tv/ Wed, 16 Apr 2025 18:34:02 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=668174 These tips will help you balance both a TV and a fireplace in one room, without overcrowding the space.

A cozy fireplace makes for a beautiful focal point in your living room, but how does it affect the TV location? Incorporating both elements into your layout can be a design challenge— because essentially, they are two large rectangles fighting for attention. Many people choose to mount the TV over the fireplace, but is that really the best choice? We spoke to interior designer and architect Matthew Coates to walk you through how to create a balanced space with a TV and a fireplace.

Pros and Cons of Putting a TV Over a Fireplace

The advantages of hanging the TV over the fireplace are:

 • Saves wall space
 • Consolidates both elements for a tidy look
 • Works well with non-functioning fireplaces

“Putting a TV over the fireplace seems clever on paper, but in practice, it’s rarely the best setup,” says Coates. The drawbacks include:

 • Places the TV too high
 • Awkward viewing angle
 • Potential heat damage to TV
 • Tricky cord management
 • Competing focal points

Reasons Why People Put TVs Over Fireplaces

Because the fireplace is already an attention grabber, some people reason that placing the TV over the fireplace just makes sense. It’s an easy way to enjoy a crackling fire while you watch your favorite Netflix series, but you might end up looking unbalanced. “Both the fireplace and TV are both built-in features, and if you stack them, they compete with each other to be the focal point in the room,” says Coates. “Instead of letting one or the other be the centerpiece, you end up with visual tension that can ruin the whole experience.”

Another reason you might land on placing the TV over the fireplace is that you’re short on wall space. If the other walls include windows or doorways, options for the TV are limited, and above the fireplace is the best choice. We’ll go over how to make it work up ahead.

Alternatives to Putting a TV Over the Fireplace

Instead of over the fireplace, consider placing the TV next to the fireplace. “Placing it next to the fireplace gives each piece its own room without taking away from either,” says Coates. If there isn’t a lot of available wall space, skip the wall mount and use a small media cabinet or even a corner cabinet and stand the TV on top.

“Another consideration is a built-in setup with the fireplace centrally located and the TV concealed behind a sliding door, a cabinet or shelving unit on one side,” says Coates. “It has a deliberate look and keeps all things visually grounded.” A built-in TV wall has a big impact that can incorporate both the TV and the fireplace into one intentional focal point.

Tips for Putting a TV Over a Fireplace

If putting the TV over your fireplace is the only option, follow these tips for the best possible outcome.

A Low Fireplace is Ideal

Hanging a TV over the fireplace works best with a fireplace that is low to the ground, so the TV isn’t placed too high. “The fireplace should be as low as possible to the floor,” says Coates. “A linear or modern fireplace installed closer to the floor offers more options to install the TV at a decent height. If possible, recess the TV into the wall or get a frame-style TV to help it blend in better.”

Prioritize Viewing Comfort

Again, with a TV, it’s all about the viewing height—which is why the fireplace can complicate things. “Ideally, the screen should be at center eye level from your seating position, typically at around 42 inches off the ground,” says Coates, “However, with a fireplace thrown into the equation, there usually tends to be some give and take.”

According to Coates, hang the TV about 10 to 12 inches above the mantel. Any lower will risk overcrowding and heat damage; any higher will most likely cause an uncomfortable viewing angle.

Skip the Mantel

“Bypass the clunky mantel,” says Coates. “That will force everything upwards, which exacerbates the height issue.” Not only will a decorative mantel cause the TV to be even higher, it can also clutter up the space. A simple display of only the fireplace and the TV will look more appealing and streamlined.

3D Backdrop

Add some dimension and a pop of color to your entryway with a 3D backdrop. This is a great option for homes where you want to show its personality through design and showcase work from local vendors and small businesses. Instagram user, @CitrusGroveCreations, posted a picture of this 3D entryway shelf that’s reminiscent of Nova Scotia sunset with rocks and waves.

What We Like About It: We like the use of color and dimension that brings this standard home decor element to life in a new and exciting way. Plus, the hooks make hanging everyday items such as coats, keys, and purses practical.

Classic Wood Shelf

When it comes to modern appeal, you can’t go wrong with a wooden entryway shelf. Instagram user @ForestedWay posted this wood shelf that makes it easy to stay organized with its built-in ledge and hooks for those everyday essentials.

What We Like About It: We like the farmhouse aesthetic that adds a warm, natural look to a space and can be on the more minimalistic side.

Geometric Shelf

Unless you’re a carpenter or professional craftsman, it may be hard to replicate this entryway shelf yourself, but you can commission this piece to a contractor. This rainbow-shaped shelf offers groovy ’80s vibes and adds the perfect touch of whimsy to any home. Instagram user @BensonDWelling added different vases and glassware to this shelf to spruce it up as opposed to keys and houseplants.

What We Like About It: This isn’t your traditional entryway shelf but rather a decorative statement piece that captures the eye. You can pick a color that matches the rest of your household decor or opt for a more vibrant color to give it a personality of its own.

Picture Backdrop

A painted backdrop is one of the best entryway shelf ideas we’ve come across since it’s not only decorative but also transforms this generally lackluster household staple into a piece of artwork. Instagram user @Nohemiwooddesigns‘s shelf has a background of a sunset in the woods, suitable for any home, apartment or dorm room that needs art.

What We Like About It: This entryway shelf is fully functional, with hooks and space to store keys, house plants, and other miscellaneous objects.

Table Shelf

A table shelf is not only practical for those keys, bags, and photo frames but can also offer depth to a bare space. The wooden material gives it more of a rustic farmhouse appearance suitable for more modern homes. Instagram user, @HillBuiltItCreations made this shelf and offer custom designs which goes to show just how versatile this entryway shelf can be.

What We Like About It: The legs of this shelf stick to the wall so they don’t take up floor space and they are intricately carved to enhance the overall appearance.

Floating Shelf

A floating shelf is a suitable option for those entryways that don’t have too much room, whether that’s one for a tiny studio apartment or a townhouse. TikTok user @InteriorByKat posted this video of a floating entryway shelf that she installed herself with anchors, screws, and a screwdriver.

What We Like About It: This floating shelf from IKEA is only $30 and can be easily installed in your home in less than 20 minutes and with only three tools.

Rectangle Floating Shelf

This is a unique idea for spaces with a staircase near the front door. Instagram user @Pimlicointeriors posted this rectangle floating shelf that they decorated with books, vases, and photo frames. It is super minimalistic and doesn’t take up a lot of floor space, making it a coveted option for homeowners.

What We Like About It: Unlike a traditional entryway shelf, this one serves more as a decorative piece to bring a space to life instead of being a placeholder for keys and purses (though, it can be that too).

Bohemian Shelf

Bohemian home decor has been popular for years and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Instagram user @AuFaitLiving posted this boho-style entryway shelf that also serves as a coatrack. She put jackets, purses, and hats on it and a succulent on the top shelf for added decoration.

What We Like About It: Those who prioritize style will be fans of this boho shelf that has a natural finish and wooden exterior that can serve as storage and decor in a space.

Pine Wood Shelf

A pine wood shelf is a classic, simplistic and functional option. It’s great for those spaces where you don’t want it to be the center of attention while still serving as a storage space. Instagram user, @WoodYouBuy, accented the shelf with a polaroid camera, hat, succulent, and notebook.

What We Like About It: This pine wood shelf is easy on the eye and can hold everyday essentials without taking up too much space.

Choose A Light Color Scheme

Choose a Light Color Scheme

Although paint colors are subjective, dark colors are often a no-no in small rooms. Lighter color palettes cast the illusion of a larger area and make the space feel airy, like in this kitchen from @jogalbraithathome. When dark color schemes are used in smaller rooms, it can create a suffocating feeling as though the walls are closing in on what is already a space-challenged room.

What We Like About It: “Lighter tones are a go-to for small rooms because they reflect light, but I always suggest warm, soft neutrals like off-white, pale taupe or muted sage instead of stark white as I find it too sterile for a home,” says interior designer, Bree Steele.

A modern and stylish living room with sunlight

Leggy Furniture

Opting for furniture with legs showing opens up a small space. Large furniture pieces that rest directly on the floor can appear too bulky and visually weigh down the room. While leggy furniture allows the floor to breathe, creating the illusion of more light and space in a small room.

What We Like About It: “Raised furniture leaves more of the floor to be visible, which tricks the eye into perceiving more space,” says Steele.

Sheer Window Treatments

Stay away from bulky, heavy, and ornate window treatments. They may look pretty, but the heavy materials subdue too much natural light. Use the windows in a small room to bring light into every corner. Consider slatted window blinds, sheer curtains, or bamboo shades.

What We Like About It: Slatted blinds provide privacy when closed, and bamboo shades offer semi-privacy when closed (but also allow sun to filter through the woven material).

Use Mirrors

Use Mirrors

Work small room magic with mirrors. They are an ideal accessory for making a room appear larger. Mirrors serve two beneficial purposes: first, the room essentially doubles in size thanks to the reflection (especially if you use one extra large floor mirror, as seen here from @life_at_number52). Second, natural light reflects off the mirrors, making the room bright and airy.

What We Like About It: “I often put a large mirror across from a window to reflect natural light,” says Steele. “Or for a 2-in-1 approach, you can use mirrored furniture in your space.”

A blue bookshelf displays colorful books and decorative items, including vases, plants, and sculptures, creating an artistic and vibrant interior space.

Color-Coordinate Shelves

Display accessories with similar colors on wall shelves or bookshelves. This helps to keep a small room looking organized and neat rather than cluttered. You can also use baskets and bins on your shelving to hide away unattractive items while still keeping essentials within reach.

What We Like About It: Small rooms don’t have to be plain! You can still use all your favorite decor and accessories, but keeping things organized by color will help a small room look bigger.

Add Stripes

Add Stripes

I love a good stripe moment, and this beauty from @graceful_designs_diy is a perfect example. Vertical stripes on the walls or furniture, draw the eye up and create the illusion of more space. Consider striped wallpaper, painting stripes on the wall, or floor-to-ceiling striped window treatments.

What We Like About It: “Find a way to incorporate striped wallpaper on the walls,” says interior designer Ashley Powell. “Take it even further and line those walls with grosgrain tape trim studded with nail heads.”

Incorporate Multifunctional Furniture

Incorporate Multifunctional Furniture

Don’t overload a small room with too much furniture. Instead, use furniture that can serve a dual purpose—that way the room is still functional, but not overcrowded. Try a sofa with hidden storage, a steamer trunk used as a coffee table, or like in this bedroom from @lifeat_rosecottage—a makeup vanity doubles as a nightstand.

What We Like About It: “Compact designs, ideally serving multiple uses, will leave more empty space for the eye to wander,” says Steele. “Modular and nesting pieces are also great as they offer flexibility without cluttering the space.”

Interior of living room

Tall Storage Furniture

You might think short bookshelves or other small storage furniture is best for a small room. But actually, the opposite is true. Tall furniture creates the illusion that the room is bigger and gives you more space for storage and decor. Don’t be afraid to include a bookshelf that reaches all the way to the ceiling!

What We Like About It: “Tall secretaries and etageres are great keeping those eyes traveling up in small spaces,” says Powell, “Especially when you load the tops of those pieces up with art and cool objects.”

Cozy living room design, poster frame mockup in warm interior design space

Ditch the Clutter

Learning how to make a small room look bigger starts with the decluttering. Too much clutter overpowers the square footage and will make the room look small and cramped. This doesn’t mean you have to be a minimalist. But try to reduce the amount of visual clutter and junk you don’t need as much as possible, keeping only meaningful or useful items on display.

What We Like About It: Decluttering is powerful! It not only makes small rooms look bigger, but it also improves your mood and frees up precious mental space.

A person mops a wooden floor in a bright room with a gray couch and windows, enhancing the space's cleanliness and orderliness.

Light-Colored Flooring

Light-colored flooring can create the illusion of a larger space. Light wood, in particular, reflects light around the room and produces a general sense of openness. If you don’t have the option of replacing darkwood floors or carpets, use light-toned rugs to cover as much of the area as possible.

What We Like About It: If your small space has an open floor plan, the same light flooring throughout will trick the eye to infinite space. Changes in the flooring chop up the rooms and make everything feel smaller.

Monochromatic Color

Monochromatic Color

“A monochromatic color scheme (think walls, trim and ceilings are all painted the same shades) is also a good trick to expand the room as it creates a seamless look with no hard line for the eye to stay hung up on,” says Steele. Light colors are safest for a small space, so try drenching the room warm taupe or sage green; but a monochromatic moody color can work too, like in this space by @meganpisanodesign.

What We Like About It: When the walls and ceiling are the same color, your eyes don’t know where the wall stops and the ceiling begins; making the space feel endless.

Built-in Open wardrobe

Built-In Storage Cabinet

Sometimes, the only thing lacking in a small bathroom is storage space. When there’s no extra floor space, consider a built-in cabinet that utilizes the open space within the walls. You (or a contractor) can build this useful cabinet with the detailed instructions found here.

What We Like About It: This storage cabinet is entirely built inside the wall, freeing up precious floor space while still providing shelves of useful storage.

Clear Furniture

Dark wood or bulky furniture can overcrowd and weigh down the room. Instead, opt for see-through furniture, such as a glass desk or clear acrylic coffee table, as seen here from @adlintejeda. Clear furniture allows more of the floor to be visible, which makes a small room feel more open while still proving a chic and unique design element.

What We Like About It: “Glass or acrylic furniture create a barely-there look that keeps the room feeling airy,” says Steele.

Plain Upholstery

Choose plain, solid-color upholstery instead of pieces with busy patterns. Solid, minimalist upholstery helps streamline a room and look less chaotic. Plain upholstery also preserves the clean lines of furniture pieces, making a room feel neat and orderly.

What We Like About It: Unlike trendy patterns, solid upholstery is a timeless choice without the worry of it going out of style.

Move Furniture Away from the Walls

You might think butting all your furniture against the walls will make a small room look bigger, but that arrangement can look imbalanced and awkward. Small adjustments like scooting your sofa away from the wall, or moving your bed out of the corner creates more flow and makes the space look roomier. This cozy living room from @homewithchelc shows this tip in action.

What We Like About It: “Floating furniture in the middle of the room keeps seating arrangements intimate and allows for pathways around the periphery, thus making the spaces feel more windy and spacious,” says Powell.

A modern living room features a gray sofa facing a sleek TV. A round table holds drinks, with large windows providing natural light and a cozy atmosphere.

Vertical Paneling

“Add vertical paneling that plays with that sense of height to draw the eye upward,” says Steele, “The movement of the eyes tricks the brain into thinking that the ceilings are higher, which instantly adds to the illusion of space.”

What We Like About It: Vertical paneling not only makes a small room look bigger, it also adds an interesting design element that adds to the overall style and coziness of the space.

Small room Interior

Play with Scale

You obviously can’t overload a small room with big furniture, but using too many small pieces doesn’t work either. A small room filled with small pieces looks like a cluttered doll house. “Make sure you have a good balance of appropriately sized rugs, furniture, and case goods,” says Powell.

What We Like About It: A large rug, tall bookcase, or roomy armchair can anchor the room while still leaving plenty of space for your other pieces.

@heyiitscourt Its crazy what some wallpaper, new nightstands, and some scones can do to make a big, plain white wall feel super cozy!!! #newyorkcity #nycapartment #interiordesign #apartmentdecor #wallpaper #wallsconces ♬ tell me everything is about me but what if it is – babyloncowboy 🍉

Strategic Lighting

The right lighting choices will brighten up a small space and make it look bigger. Opt for a semi-flush or flush mount ceiling light which will bounce light around the room without impeding on the line of sight. Floor lamps add visual height, and wall sconces instead of table lamps free up surface space—shown here in this small apartment bedroom from @heyiitscourt/.

What We Like About It: Well-chosen lighting makes a small space more practical, and adds ambiance for a cozy glow.

Large Artwork

Large Artwork

One oversized piece of art on the wall of a small room creates a sense of grandeur. Look how the large art in this small kids bedroom by @jessica_kaarina makes the space seem bigger. Art and wall accessories that are too small just look like a hodgepodge in a small room with limited wall space.

What We Like About It: Oversized artwork is an easy way to make a big statement in your small room without obstructing the walkways.

candle, rowan berry and pumpkin in the living room on a table

Light Candles

One of the quickest and most surefire ways to ignite the spirit of hygge in your house is to light a few candles. Be it jars of scented candles or simple tealights, these flickering flames will instantly make your space feel a little warmer and a little cozier. Any time of day is appropriate: morning, afternoon, or night. So keep those candles and a box of matches in good supply.

sofa with blanket

Blankets and Sweaters

Having a few quality knit or fleece throw blankets around the house invites you to snuggle in and make yourself at home. A great sweater can do the trick, too. If you’ve got multiple blankets, toss one over the back of a chair and another across the arm of the couch. Wrapping yourself up signals that you’re settling in for some serious relaxation and maybe a long conversation, board game, or good book.

cookies on grill rack

Aroma of Baking

There’s nothing quite like the smell of bread, cookies, or biscuits baking and filling the house with a delicious aroma. A wafting hint of spiced cookies carries with it the promise of a snack, which is very hygge. So, dig through your cookbook collection and mark the recipes you’ll use when you’re infusing your kitchen with tantalizing smells. Also, keeping a cookie jar full of treats on the counter isn’t a bad idea either.

Pouring Creamer into a Cup of Coffee

Coffee, Tea, Cocoa

A cup of something hot goes a long way when it comes to relaxing and feeling at home. A very hygge gathering would probably include a pot of rich coffee with some cream, an herbal tea, or a mug of sweet cocoa. Keep a selection of hot drink options on hand, but don’t stress over the presentation. Hygge is meant to be stress-free and enjoying what you have in the moment.

Close-up of dry flowers bouquet in jar at living room

Nostalgia on Display

Decorate your space with possessions that mean something to you, that tell a story or revive happy memories. A hygge-centric design inside your living room might include framed drawings or cards, a dried bouquet of flowers, knick-knacks from travels abroad, or found objects on display. Show off the things that matter to you, and you’ll always have that feeling of contentedness at home.

man selecting record to play

Put a Record On

Music can go a long way toward setting a cozy mood in your home. If you have a record player, take the time to choose a record that fills the room with something you and everyone else enjoy. Declutter Your Space

Hygge is all about enjoying the moment, relishing togetherness, and feeling at ease. If you’re like most people, a messy home can provoke feelings of stress and agitation. Avoid those negative vibes by keeping your space in order.

man turning phone off

Turn Off Your Smartphone

One of the biggest deterrents to creating a feeling of hygge in this day and age is the prevalence of smartphones. The temptation to constantly check your phone for email, text messages, or anything else prevents you from enjoying where you are and the people you’re with. To really have that concept of hygge in your home, try instituting a rule about a timeframe when people can take a break from their smartphones and other devices.

Prepare a Home-Cooked Meal

Hosting a dinner at home is a very hygge way to have a good time. You can wear your slippers as you prepare something for your guests to enjoy. It doesn’t have to be a fancy meal. In fact, the more low-key you can make the evening, the better. Hygge is all about conviviality at home, good conversation, and a warm, no-frills sense of hospitality. So, if you decide to have friends over for dinner, don’t overthink it. Serve something simple to make, light a few candles, and settle in for a relaxing evening.

Comfy Furniture

A great couch or armchair with a footrest beckons you to have a seat. Having a comfortable array of seats in your house promotes a healthy hygge feeling, and ensures that you and anyone else will find a nice place to perch for a while. Try adding some throw pillows on the couch, or seat cushions to your dining room chairs to add to that feeling of comfort.

11 Stylish Ways to Create Privacy in an Open Floor Plan https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/open-floor-plan-privacy-ideas/ Tue, 25 Feb 2025 20:55:05 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=listicle&p=662297 If you have an open concept home, then you'll probably want some privacy. Here are some ideas to help get you started from curtains to plant walls.

The post 11 Stylish Ways to Create Privacy in an Open Floor Plan appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

Add a Half Wall

A half wall creates a distinction between areas in a home without completely closing off a space. This half-wall shown in the photo from Instagram user, @MazeConcept, features wooden slats that effortlessly blend into any modern house decor without being an eyesore.

What We Like About It: Zakheim shares that a benefit of half-walls is that they provide privacy while allowing light and air to flow through making them popular and a suitable option for homeowners.

Use Decorative Dividers

Foldable dividers are arguably the most popular way people usually try to create separation in a space. These dividers posted by Instagram user, @MWD_Interiors, are decorated with artwork to give the space personality while simultaneously offering privacy. Plus, if you want to take them down simply fold them up and put them away.

What We Like About It: Instead of traditional dividers, these decorative ones are more whimsical and can accent a space without feeling too stuffy.

Incorporate House Plants

The inclusion of plants in a home can bring new life to a space and depending on size and placement it can help create privacy similar to the one Instagram user, @DublinPlantGal has in her home. “Incorporating plants in varying heights adds a green privacy barrier while maintaining an airy feel,” says Zakheim.

What We Like About It: Whether it’s a large house plant or a few small house plants hanging from the ceiling or on a shelf they can create barriers in a space to create privacy.

@alexandragater I used two things: a curtain track and curtains, both from Ikea. What should I do a hack for next? Let me know in the comments! #diy #studioapartment #interiordesign ♬ Life Will Be – Cleo Sol

Put Up Curtains

According to Todd Harmon, principal interior designer and co-founder of Patio Productionssoundproof curtains aren’t just for windows and can be mounted on a ceiling track to create a sense of enclosure without making a space feel heavy. TikTok user, @AlexandraGrater posted a video using curtains next to her bed to create the illusion of privacy.

What We Like About It: It’s an affordable way to establish privacy in essentially any space that has a ceiling.

@leighanndaugherty 🏠DIY ROOM DIVIDING WALL I absolutely love the KALLAX shelf series from IKEA!! They are extremely versatile and I have used them for countless client projects. Build your own WONDERWALL and store your personal library, favorite decor and hidden storage to maximize your space-all while dividing a room! I love to switch stuff seasonally to keep it fresh!#downsizing #organized #organizedhome #roomdivider #ikea #getyourhouseinorder ♬ Wonderwall (Remastered) – Oasis

Add a Bookshelf

Adding a bookshelf to a space can not only be aesthetically pleasing, but also create a more clear separation of different areas in a space. Harmon suggests adding a large bookcase and filling it with books to create a creative type of wall similar to that shown in this video from TikTok user @LeighAnnDaugherty.

What We Like About It: This method is not only easy, but costomizable. You can use multiple book cases to change the look and feel of any open space.

Add a Two Way Fireplace

Aside from providing warmth during the cold winter months, a two way fireplace can be used to create division. Instagram user, @Shane_Nicholas_Design, posted this image that highlights the fireplace that serves as a focal point of the space while also offering privacy between sides.

What We Like About It: A two-way fireplace creates a visual barrier that helps section off areas that can be beneficial in an open floor plan to create the feeling of separation.

Hang Floating Artwork

Having floating artwork is another way to create privacy in an open space, especially if you have a large piece hanging in mid air like Instagram user, @Wyethrayinteriors. The size of the artwork can vary based on personal preference and how well it’s reinforced to the ceiling.

What We Like About It: Floating artwork offers a two-for-one benefit serving has both home decor and a privacy piece in some regard.

Add a Sliding Door

When thinking about privacy ideas for an open floor plan, a sliding door, like this one in a video posted by Instagram user, @wallpanels_com, probably comes to mind almost instantly. According to Taylor, sliding doors or barn doors can be a great solution for areas that need occasional privacy, like home offices or bedrooms in an open floor plan.

What We Like About It: This type of door can create separation and privacy in seconds as shown and revert back to its open state when necessary.

Have a Staircase

A staircase doesn’t necessarily provide privacy in the traditional sense, however, it creates the illusion of separation, especially if it’s in the middle of a space. Instagram user, @Ronazizi, has a glass railing for their staircase which creates the feeling of privacy.

What We Like About It: Multi-level houses or apartments need a staircase so why not utilize it to help create privacy. If you already need it anyway, then you might as well have it serve another function.

Use Frosted Glass

Frosted glass can be used for a wall partition or for part of a railing as mentioned in the slide above. Instagram user, @melange_interiors_p_ltd, has a frosted glass partition in the middle of their space to create separation and privacy while still serving as a stylistic choice.

What We Like About It: Frosted glass can create the illusion of privacy while still allowing light to pass through to brighten up a space.

Heavy fabrics, ties, fringed trim and roller shades belong in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. Dirty blinds or cracked blinds also make a home look dated.

We displayed this floor-to-ceiling mirror setup in 1982 inside an apartment. We said back then that floor-to-ceiling mirrors added a feeling of more space and also hid cabinetry and an entertainment center. You might notice the angled lighting creates a dramatic effect and helps point your eyes where the interior designer wanted you to focus.

We’ve shown any number of glass block projects through the years, like a glass block shower and a glass block basement window. Glass block walls appeared in homes in a variety of ways in the ’90s.

Faux Stone Fireplaces

There’s a lot going in this room but one thing that stands out is the faux rock fireplace. Homeowners moved away from the classic brick fireplace in the ’70s and ’80s to something like this. Then there’s the ubiquitous track lighting in the room and vertical blinds on the sliding glass door.

DIY Curtain Rods: Add Personal Flair to Your Home https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/diy-curtain-rods/ Tue, 28 Jan 2025 22:05:18 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=649760 Transform ordinary windows into designer focal points with our step-by-step guide to crafting and installing DIY curtain rods.

The post DIY Curtain Rods: Add Personal Flair to Your Home appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

Curtains are a welcome accessory to any room. Like a piece of jewelry, curtains can add a lot of depth to an environment if done well. But if curtains aren’t done properly, it draws the eye in a highly unflattering way.

And just like a good accessory, curtains and curtain rods can get expensive. Seriously, the only reason I purchased a sewing machine was to save money making my living room curtains. I preferred to spend the money on a very nice piece of curtain fabric that would have cost me a ton if I purchased the SAME material in an already-made curtain.

The same thought process applies to the curtain rod. I invested in hole saw bits for my drill press with a specific diameter so I could cut the wood rings I wanted. In the end, it truly is an investment, as these tools will be used repeatedly for many other projects. Besides, I love nothing more than telling guests, “I made them!”

When making curtain rods, there are many ways to go. Metal, wood, plastic? The bottom line is that, beyond serving its function by holding a curtain, a curtain rod can add some flair to the space and reflect the characteristics of the style. Decide on the color of the finish and make sure it complements the other finishes in the space.

Get as fancy or simple as you wish. Enjoy the process… To make your life easier, I share the steps with a couple of my favorite techniques: Pyrography and decorative paint finishes. Enjoy!

Bracket Overview

Personalize Your Space With Diy Curtain Rods Bracket Overview

Cutting List

KEYQTY.PARTDIMENSIONS
A2Top cap3/4″ x 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″
B2Back leg3/4″ x 1-1/2″ x 3″
C2Ring3/4″ x 1-1/4″ID x 2″OD
D1Rod1″-dia. x 48″*

Make the brackets

Cut the top caps (A) and back legs (B) for your curtain rods and nail them together using wood glue and brad nails, forming an “L bracket.” Orient the top cap (A) on top of the back leg (B). If your curtain rod will be longer than four feet, or if the curtain’s fabric is heavier, make an additional bracket to serve as a center support and prevent the rod from sagging in the middle.

Make The Brackets

Make the rings

Using a 2-1/8-in. hole saw in a drill press, cut a circle from 1×3 material for each bracket you made. Hole saws are measured by the outside diameter so a 2-1/8-in. hole saw will cut a 2-inch circle or one just slightly shy of it. Place a sacrificial board underneath the 1×3 to prevent blowing out on the back side of the circle when the hole saw cuts through.

Create a ring by cutting a hole through the center of the roughly 2-in. circle with a 1-1/4-in. hole saw. Use the same arbor hole from the 2-1/8-in. hole saw to center the 1-1/4-in. hole. When drilling with the smaller diameter 1-1/4-in. hole saw, use double stick tape to secure the circle to the sacrificial piece of wood underneath it. If necessary, lock the piece in place with other pieces of wood so that it does not move during the drilling process.

Once cut, sand the edges smooth and remove any cutting marks from the wood rings you have created.

Make The Rings

Burn the ring edges (optional)

Utilizing a pyrography pen, create a texture of straight lines along the outer edge of the curtain rod rings.

Set the temperature by performing a test run with the same species of wood and tip you intend to use. If your pyrography pen does not have a temperature adjustment, you will have to adjust your speed as you burn. You should move the pyrography pen faster if you are burning softwood. Slower if you’re burning harder wood. Also, slow down slightly when burning against the grain to prevent skips in your burn line.

Burn The Ring Edges

Cut and drill the curtain rod

Cut the one-inch dowel to the length you require, usually 12 inches wider than the window opening. Drill a 7/32-in. hole at each end, 1/2 inches from the rod end. These holes will accommodate the small tie rack peg we will use as a stop to prevent the rod from falling out of the ring when curtains are drawn or closed. Drill these holes with the dowel in the same orientation to keep them aligned and symmetrical.

Cut And Drill The Curtain Rod

Paint

Paint all pieces. First, apply two coats of black paint, and then build up the coats of your chosen metallic color to a solid finish. If you want a brushed metal look, lightly apply coats with a dry brush. If you want a solid metallic look, build up with layers. Keep in mind that your metallic paints will reflect the movement of your brush strokes. Most metallic paints will require more than the standard two coats of paint to achieve a solid look.

Paint

Pre-drill hanging holes

Pre-drill the mounting holes in the bracket’s back leg (B) with a countersink drill bit so that screws will be seeded flush with the surface. The holes were drilled 1/2-in. down from the inner corner of the bracket and 1/4-in. in from the edges. Touch up the countersunk holes with primer and paint before installation.

Pre Drill Hanging Holes

Attach the rings

Position the painted rings so they are aligned and centered on brackets. Pre-drill countersunk holes from the backside of the top cap (A) and back leg (B) of the bracket, and use wood glue and one-inch screws to secure the rings in place.

Attach The Rings

How To Hang Curtain Rods

Determine the bracket placement

It is recommended that the brackets be positioned so that they are wider than the window opening in order to ensure that, when the curtains are drawn, they can completely cover the window. It is important to consider the length of your curtains as well as the location where you would like them to fall when determining the height of the bracket.

Decide how the curtain rod brackets will be attached to the wall. To determine what hardware to securely install your curtain rod brackets, use a stud finder to determine if you have a stud or hollow drywall at the desired location. Be mindful that some heavy curtains can weigh up to 50 pounds when choosing the appropriate screw or anchor.

Determine The Bracket Placement

Hang the curtain rods and curtains

Use the appropriate screws or anchors to secure the brackets to the wall. A level should be used to ensure that the brackets are level with one another. After that, thread the curtains onto the rod and the rod through the brackets. To complete the installation and ensure the curtain rod is locked in place, insert the tie rack peg into the drilled holes at each end of the rod.

Hang The Curtain Rods And Curtains

FAQ

Why use black paint as a primer for metallic paints?

When applying a metallic paint, always use a dark color to serve as a primer and help you get to the metallic finish with less coats and help the metallic have more brilliance when done. Decorative painters often use black or red paint as a base color under silver, brass, gold or copper.

How high off the floor should my curtain be?

The proper height to hang curtains depends on the style and function of the room. Here are a few common options:

 • Floor-length: Formal. Hangs 1/2 inch above floor, creating an elegant “kissing the floor” effect.
 • Casual Length/Float Length: Sits about one inch above the floor for a relaxed, modern look and easy maintenance.
 • Puddled Style: Extends 1-10 inches onto floor for dramatic luxury. Not recommended with children/pets.
 • Shorter Length: Practical for specific situations like children’s rooms, areas with pets, or above radiators. Can make ceilings appear lower and room feel more casual.

Avocado Green MattressVIA MERCHANT

best overall non-toxic mattress

Avocado Green Mattress

Pros:

 • Made with organic, fair-trade and non-toxic materials
 • Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified by UL Environment
 • No odors or off-gassing
 • High-quality look and feel
 • Comfortable and supportive
 • Available in three firmness levels
 • Cool to the touch
 • No flame retardants used

Cons:

 • Expensive
 • Does not eliminate motion transfer

High quality, non-toxic materials, cooling properties and edge support make the Avocado Green mattress the cream of the crop. Every Avocado mattress is lab-tested for harmful levels of toxic substances so you can rest comfortably knowing that it’s completely free from formaldehyde, PFAS (known as forever chemicals), chemical fire retardants and off-gassing materials. And you will rest comfortably thanks to this mattress’s high quality construction.

Depending on the size you choose, each Avocado Green mattress has between 833 and 1,379 steel coils individually encased in fabric pockets. These coils are arranged in seven ergonomic zones to support your hips, back and shoulders. Moreover, a reinforced steel perimeter ensures that this mattress retains its structure without sinking or compressing.

According to our tester Nancy Snyder, sleeping on this mattress was like sleeping on a 5-star hotel bed. “It wasn’t just ‘comfortable for a box mattress,’ says Snyder in her full Avocado Green mattress review. “This might actually be one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever laid on. Our only regret? Getting this for the guest bedroom, as it was more comfortable than our main bedroom mattress!”

The only thing you may want to consider is the fact that this mattress does not reduce motion transfer as Snyder hoped it would. Though the brand claims that the coils reduce motion transfer, Snyder was able to feel her dog jumping up and moving around on the bed beside her. Snyder also points out that many other reviewers claimed they were able to feel every movement from their partner. “But while this is important for some, it may not be a deal breaker for others,” she adds.

 • Ideal for side sleepers, those with chronic back pain and sleepers over 230 pounds
 • Gel memory foam and coil system reduces heat retention
 • Premium seven-layer design
 • Luxurious cashmere-blend cover

Cons:

 • 24-hour inflation time (and up to 72 hours to fully expand)
 • Not flippable, but you can rotate it

The DreamCloud mattress is made up of multiple layers of clean, supportive foam and individually wrapped innerspring coils. The foam and coil system coil system work together to reduce heat retention, disperse body heat and promote better airflow, reducing the risk of overheating.

Additionally, the cashmere blend cover is moisture-wicking and breathable, providing you with a cooler, more comfortable sleep sleep. This was a huge plus for our tester, Jill Schildhouse, whose hypothyroidism causes her to run hot. “Each night when I got into bed, I noticed how much cooler the sheets felt against my skin and absolutely loved the sensation,” she says in her full DreamCloud review. “And even though I still ended up feeling warm some nights, I no longer woke up overheated and drenched in sweat.”

In addition to keeping her cool at night, Schildhouse also appreciated how comfortable and supportive the DreamCloud was. Though, admittedly, she was skeptical at first. “The firmness is listed as a 6.5 on a scale from one to 10, placing this mattress in the ‘luxury firm’ category. For the first few days, we were acutely aware of how much firmer the DreamCloud felt than our previous mattress. But by week two, we were fully on board with how supportive it was,” she explains.

The only thing Schildhouse struggled with was finding sheets that were deep/wide enough for the mattress’s 16-inch-deep profile. But don’t worry, because we’ve got you covered there, too. Here are the best organic cotton sheets to put on your new non-toxic mattress.

Saatva Latex Hybrid MattressVIA MERCHANT

A combination of innersprings and GOLS-certified, natural latex make this Saatva mattress a true hybrid model that you’ll never want to leave. According to our tester, Lara Eucalano, this mattress didn’t need to be broken in at all. It was comfortable from day one. “The real test for this mattress was when I unexpectedly tested positive for COVID. It hit me harder than I expected, and I wound up spending almost a week in bed. Even with a fever and body aches, I was able to sleep for 12 hours a night,” writes Lara in her full Saatva latex hybrid mattress review. “I’ve never been more thankful to have a comfortable mattress to fall into. Based on that week alone, I’m a Saatva fan for life.”

Saatva says this model is a six out of 10 on the firmness scale. Lara agrees with that score and explains that the mattress is on the firmer side without being stiff. “You sink into the plush top layer, but not so far that it’s impossible to extract yourself from bed in the morning,” she writes.

Naturepedic Eos Classic Organic MattressVIA MERCHANT

best customizable non-toxic mattress

Naturepedic EOS Classic Organic Mattress

Pros:

 • Customizable firmness on each side
 • Swappable inserts
 • Certified non-toxic and organic by GOTS
 • Latex and latex-free options available
 • Available in sizes twin to California king
 • Fast, free shipping and free returns

Cons:

 • Requires assembly

You can spend hours researching mattresses before biting the bullet and submitting your order. But what happens when the mattress of your dreams turns out to be the mattress of your nightmares? Well, you’re either out beaucoup bucks or you have to go through the hassle of returning a mattress. Not so with this Naturepedic mattress.

This non-toxic mattress is completely customizable. Not only can you and your partner select your ideal firmness, but you can swap out the inside layers at any time to ensure the perfect feel. If you find that you chose the wrong firmness level or, after years of use, it doesn’t quite feel as supportive as it used to, you can swap out a piece of the mattress instead of swapping out the whole thing. This gave our tester, Caitlyn Fitzpatrick, total peace of mind when she replaced her 10-year-old mattress with a Naturepedic.

“What makes this Naturepedic mattress so special is that you’re not married to whatever firmness level you choose, which tends to be a major concern when selecting the best mattress,” explains Caitlyn in her Naturepedic mattress review.

Because of its customizable design, this mattress doesn’t come in one piece. Caitlyn’s mattress arrived in four separate boxes. In other words, some assembly is required. And while the assembly wasn’t terribly difficult, per se, Caitlyn strongly recommends watching the brand’s instructional video first. “Before you even get started, I can’t stress enough how helpful this video from Naturepedic was. It goes through each step and gives helpful tips so you know exactly what to do,” she says.

Once she had everything assembled, it was time to hunker down and test it out. “It only took me a few nights to decide that I love this Naturepedic mattress,” she raves. “It turns out that cushion-firm is the perfect firmness for me. In fact, I regularly get knots in my left shoulder, which results in my left arm going numb and leaving me in a lot of pain. Since sleeping on the Naturepedic mattress, I’ve noticed those knots are less regular and less severe. I take it that my body likes it, and it’s more supported than it was before. And as an every-position sleeper, I’m happy whether I’m on my side, back or stomach.”

Her husband, on the other hand, wasn’t as pleased. While Caitlin loved the cushion-firm, he decided that it was too firm for his liking. They both appreciate the fact that they can simply swap out his side of the bed. “Imagine if we had to send back the entire mattress,” she says. “Not only would I be disappointed because I love my side of the bed, but it would be a bit of a headache.”

Speaking of headaches, you won’t be getting any as a result of chemicals and toxins lurking in your mattress. This Naturepedic mattress is certified non-toxic and organic by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). This model is also available with or without latex, making it ideal for people who suffer from latex allergies. A wool-free vegan option is also available.

And, if you happen to be a human furnace, you can upgrade to a cooling pillow top.

Before upgrading to the Bear mattress, our tester, Emily Way, frequently sweated through her pajamas, sheets and blankets. She was thrilled to find that the cooling gel layer and air-infused coils really do move heat out and away from her body at night. “Even on sweltering nights, I have yet to wake up drenched in sweat—a big win for me, especially for a budget mattress,” she writes in her Bear Pro Hybrid mattress review.

In addition to keeping her cool and dry at night, this Bear mattress alleviated Way’s back and hip pain. “I’m a side and stomach sleeper, while my husband is a back and side sleeper,” shares Way. “With our old mattress, both of us frequently woke up with back and hip pain. However, the Bear mattress surprised us. It’s supportive, thanks to the coils and firmness, yet also offers enough ‘give’ to cradle the body.”

Pair this non-toxic mattress with one of these best mattress toppers for an even more elevated sleep experience.

Birch Natural Mattress

Pros:

 • Hybrid design with coils and comfort layers (no memory foam)
 • Good for hot sleepers and those with joint pain
 • Designed to support all sleep positions
 • Quality construction
 • Cooling properties

Cons:

 • Contains latex, so it is not suitable for those with latex allergies
 • Bottom edge lacks support

Helix Sleep makes some of our all-time favorite mattresses. So when they rolled out the Birch Natural mattress line, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on it. This non-toxic mattress is Greenguard Gold, GOTS, Eco-Institute and Fair Trade Certified. It is constructed in Phoenix, Arizona with plush layers of wool, cotton and latex for comfort and supportive coils underneath, making it a true hybrid model. We sent it to our tester, Richard Glenn, who slept on it for a month and found it well-built and supportive.

“The medium firmness is a great balance between support and comfort,” Richard says in his Birch mattress review. “It’s not a cure-all, but it’s good enough that I don’t even think about waking up achy. When I do sleep on my back, I don’t have any lower back pain because of the support from the mattress.” This can be attributed to the mattress’s individually wrapped coils, which provide reinforced support under your hips and cradle your body while helping to align your spine.

When you order a Birch Natural mattress, you can opt for in-home delivery, setup and haul away of your old mattress. Upon delivery, Richard was impressed to find that there was no off-gassing or chemical odors. However, it did take a full 48 hours to expand. “I slept on it before it was fully inflated, and it seemed squishy,” Richard says. “24 hours later, it came to its full firmness and felt much more supportive.” This is something to keep in mind if you’re having an old mattress hauled away.

Richard was also impressed by this mattress’s cooling features. Unlike his old Tempur-Pedic mattress which trapped heat, the Birch mattress remained consistently cool. “If you’ve been sleeping on memory foam and wake up sweaty, this mattress (made without memory foam) is worth trying,” he says.

Happsy Organic MattressVIA MERCHANT

best non-toxic mattress on Amazon

Happsy Organic Mattress

Pros:

 • Fast, free delivery
 • Free returns
 • Handmade in the U.S.
 • No off-gassing smell after setup
 • Contains no flame retardants, glues, adhesives
 • Natural latex and pocket coils deliver support and comfort
 • Solid edge support all around
 • Hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant

Cons:

 • Medium-firm was too firm for our tester

Shopping on Amazon can be a gamble, but you can rest assured that the Happsy organic mattress is one of the best Amazon purchases you’ll make this year. Every Happsy mattress is handmade in the United States. They are certified nontoxic and organic by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and verified by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), meaning every mattress is free of harmful allergenic materials and odors. They’re also free from chemicals such as glue, adhesives, and flame retardants.

Our tester, Cathy Harms, was instantly smitten with her Happsy mattress, hailing its cloud-like comfort in her Happsy mattress review. She was especially pleased by how quickly it expanded and the absence of any off-gassing smell. “As someone with a strong sensitivity to chemical odors and who prioritizes a healthy sleep environment, I was pleased to find that the Happsy mattress lived up to its promise of being free from harmful chemicals and odors,” she writes.

And as someone who tosses and turns all night long, she found that she was comfortable in most positions. However, she felt that the medium-firm mattress was too firm for side sleeping. “I needed more softness for my hips and shoulders, so I ordered the optional mattress topper. It gave the mattress two additional inches of soft plushness, with a supportive foundation underneath,” she explains. “My sleep quality greatly improved during the testing period, and there was virtually no adjustment period once I added the mattress topper.” And that’s not the only thing that improved.

Harms also noticed a significant improvement in her allergy symptoms after sleeping on the Happsy mattress. “The organic wool and latex naturally repel dust mites, mold and other allergens, making it a great option for people like me with dust mite allergies or asthma,” she raves.

Silk & Snow Organic MattressVIA MERCHANT

best non-toxic mattress for neck and shoulder pain

Silk & Snow Organic Mattress

Pros:

 • Alleviated our tester's neck and shoulder pain in just 30 days
 • No weight limit
 • Three firmness levels to choose from
 • Pocket coils provide added support
 • Increased edge support
 • Reinforced handles make moving and flipping easy

Cons:

 • Mattress didn't cover our tester's entire bed frame, corner to corner

If you suffer from neck and shoulder pain, the Silk & Snow organic mattress can help. It’s constructed using a mix of soft and firm pocket spring coils that offer zoned support. A combination of soft coils on the outer thirds and firmer coils on the middle thirds provide the support needed to banish aches and pains for good.

According to our tester, Sabrina Tillman, this Silk & Snow mattress did indeed help her wake up pain-free. “I noticed a positive difference in my neck and shoulder pain after the first night of sleep,” she writes in her Silk & Snow mattress review. “After 30 days, I’m amazingly pain-free in my neck and shoulders when I wake up, despite spending hours a day hunched over a laptop. I also feel generally less creaky and achy when I get out of bed.”

And, of course, Tillman appreciated the fact that this mattress is made using chemical- and synthetic-free materials. It has received certifications from the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and Eco-Institut. In other words, you won’t be sharing a bed with heavy metals, VOCs, pesticides or other harmful chemicals.

Tillman’s only complaint was that this mattress didn’t fit her queen-sized bed frame corner to corner. “You get a peek-a-boo view of the wooden slats of the bed frame if you look closely, even though the mattress is queen-sized,” she explains. But in spite of this aesthetic oddity, as she calls it, Tillman appreciated how this mattress took no time to inflate and had no odors or off-gassing. She also liked the reinforced handles on both sides, which makes it easy peasy to rotate, flip and lift the mattress as needed.

What To Look For When Buying a Non-Toxic Mattress

When shopping for the best non-toxic mattress, Carlson advises looking for a mattress made of natural and organic materials like organic cotton, natural latex, and wool, which are free from harmful chemicals. He adds that certifications are also great indicators of a non-toxic mattress.

“Look for GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) for organic fabrics, GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) for organic latex, and CertiPUR-US for low-emission foams,” he explains. “GREENGUARD Gold certification ensures low chemical emissions, improving indoor air quality. Lastly, avoid mattresses with synthetic flame retardants, VOCs, or chemical dyes, and check for clear labeling of materials to confirm the mattress meets safety and sustainability standards.”

FAQ

What type of mattress is the least toxic?

According to Carlson, natural latex mattresses are one of the least toxic options. “They are made from the sap of rubber trees and avoid synthetic chemicals commonly found in foam or hybrid mattresses,” he explains. Additionally, he points out that mattresses certified by organizations like GOTS, GOLS, or OEKO-TEX also tend to have minimal chemical exposure and meet high safety standards.

How do I know if my mattress is non-toxic?

To determine whether your mattress is non-toxic, look for Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), EWG Verified or Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certifications. If you’re unsure, contact the manufacturer or check their website to see which certifications your mattress has.

“You can also check the materials list for organic or natural components like latex, cotton, or wool,” advises Carlson. “Try to avoid mattresses with strong chemical odors or vague descriptions of their materials.”

Are non-toxic mattresses more expensive than regular mattresses?

Yes, you are likely to pay more for a non-toxic mattress. Carlson explains this is because they use higher-quality materials like organic cotton, natural latex, or wool, which cost more to produce. They are also manufactured to meet stricter health and safety standards, which adds to the cost. However, he argues that the investment reflects better materials and construction, which can also increase durability.

Rearrange and Shop Your House

One of the spending traps I fall into the most is home decor. I love shopping for art and accessories and refreshing my home with a new look, but it’s not necessary. I look back at growing up in a single-parent household; we always had a clean and lovely home, but my mom rarely bought new things. When she needed a change, she rearranged our furniture or moved things from one room to another.

Why We Love It: Rearranging gives your house new energy and makes everything feel new without spending a dime.

Underconsumption Core Gettyimages 1744124538

Unfollow Influencers and Brands

I recently came across a “restock my car with me” influencer reel. I watched as she filled her car with what seemed like an endless amount of hand sanitizer, travel-size makeup, wipes, snacks, and more products, all with beautiful color-coordinated packaging. For a moment I thought it was a great idea. How nice to always be prepared with the things I need in my car, right? But then I realized what I was watching was literally hundreds of dollars of unnecessary products that would probably rarely be used. It was time to unfollow.

Why We Love It: There’s nothing wrong with following your favorite brands and trendy influencers. But if you start buying more than you need or can afford based on their posts, it might be time to take a break.

Underconsumption Core Gettyimages 1913887427

Use Your Products Until Empty

There’s a trend within the trend of underconsumption core called “project pan.” Beauty enthusiasts challenged their followers to reach the pan of their makeup palettes before purchasing a new one. The idea can be applied to any product in your home, and basically, it means using all of a product until it’s empty before buying more. This is a philosophy I follow for almost all my shopping. Sure, I like to have things like extra paper towels on hand, but I don’t have closets full of “back stock”.

Why We Love It: Minimizing duplicate purchases will make your home less cluttered, and you’ll spend money only on the products you actually need.

Repurpose and Redesign

Repurposing or redesigning items is a fun way to save money while also stretching your creativity. An old colander makes a cute hanging planter, glass jars work as candle holders, and a fresh coat of paint can transform a dated table—the ideas are limitless. So before you click “Add to Cart,” take an inventory of things you already own and discover their new potential.

Why We Love It: Repurposing reduces waste, which is good for your wallet and the environment.

Be Intentional

Underconsumption core is not about going without the things you need, or even want; it’s just about being more mindful with your spending. Social media trends and targeted ads can lead us to think we need something and we need it now. Instead, wait 24 hours before purchasing. By the next day, you might be surprised to find the urgent need for that item has worn off.

Why We Love It: According to the mental health experts at Calm, mindful spending will help you achieve financial goals and reduce stress and anxiety by taking control of your finances.

Be an Outfit Repeater

Buying high-quality clothing and taking care of it will help you avoid the urge to buy a whole new wardrobe every season. Seen here, @Victoria.Metzinger shows off a cute outfit made entirely of older items. Don’t be afraid to wear your favorites over and over! Along the same lines, keep your closet organized so you can see everything you actually own. This will prevent you from buying a new black sweater when you already have three at home.

Why We Love It: A simple wardrobe made of your favorite items won’t feel like a sacrifice because you’ll love everything you own. Small accessories or even thrifted items can help you refresh your pieces without overspending.

Underconsumption Core Gettyimages 2064103314

Practice Gratitude

It may seem cheesy, but practicing daily gratitude has life-changing benefits, including reducing overconsumption. According to a study from Frontiers in Psychology, when adolescents practice gratitude, they become less materialistic and more generous. To reduce spending and appreciate the life and things you already have, try keeping a gratitude journal, practicing gratitude meditation, or making a daily habit of mentally reflecting on gratitude.

Why We Love It: Gratitude will help you feel content and decrease the need for unnecessary purchases and the impulse to keep up with others.

Will Your Holiday Decorations Make for a Big Electric Bill? A Cost Breakdown https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/holiday-decorations-electricity-cost/ Tue, 17 Dec 2024 19:37:56 +0000 Light up the night this season, without lighting up your electrical bill.

The post Will Your Holiday Decorations Make for a Big Electric Bill? A Cost Breakdown appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
With Christmas only a couple weeks away, we are well into the holiday light season. Yards up and down my street are filled with inflatables, and some of the houses I swear you could see from a passing plane. As an electrician, I always wonder what my neighbors’ holiday decorations’ electricity costs are — and how they compare to my home’s (rather lame in comparison) garland-and-wreath getup.

So, are you a Grinch or a Griswold? Everyone’s favorite lovable loser, Clark Griswold of Christmas Vacation fame, shut down the electric grid with his outlandish display. Ahead, I’ll walk you through the steps to figure out just how much your holiday decorations’ electricity cost will set you back.

How Much Electricity Will My Inflatables Use and Cost?

It depends on the size of the inflatables and what you pay for electricity, but it’s not much, and you can use a standard formula to find out. You’ll need to know the following:

 • The input watts (W) of the motor. Watts are a unit of electrical power.
 • How long you keep the motor running per day, in hours (h).
 • The price of electricity per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

To find the watts, look on the power adapter or motor nameplate of your inflatable. You’ll see both input and output information. To determine the cost of electricity, use the input numbers. If watts aren’t listed, find the amperes (amps), which measure electrical current flow, and multiply by 120 volts to get the watts.

As an example, a 6-foot-tall inflatable Santa on sale right now at Target draws 0.6 amps (A) at 120 volts (V). So, just multiply the numbers together to get watts (0.6A X 120V = 72W). For comparison, my friend’s 3-foot-tall pink pig inflatable draws a puny 0.3 amps and 36 watts, while a giant abominable snowman will draw more.

How much does it cost to keep Santa inflated eight hours a day? Look at your electric bill and find what you’re charged — we’ll use the November 2024 national average of $0.176 per kilowatt-hour. Divide Santa’s 72 watts by 1000 to convert to kilowatts (0.072 kW). Then, multiply the power in kilowatts, the time in hours and the price of electricity together: 0.072kW X 8h X $0.176/kWh = $0.1014. That’s about ten cents a day, or three dollars a month.

Pretty cheap, right? Of course, if you have ten Santas rather than one, and they’re inflated from Thanksgiving to January 6 (when you’re supposed to take them down), you’re looking at about $45.

How Much Electricity Will My Holiday Lights Use and Cost?

Again, it depends on how Griswold-y you get around the holidays, what kind of lights you use (incandescent or light-emitting diodes, aka LED) and your electricity price. But you can break it down the same way you did for the inflatables.

LED

Light-emitting diodes are extremely energy efficient, as much as 90% more efficient than incandescents. Check the tag on one end to find the watts or amps, then convert to kilowatts and plug in the numbers.

My tiny Charlie Brown Christmas tree holds exactly one 25-foot, 100-bulb mini LED light string, which uses a paltry 6.48 watts (0.00648 kW). Using the same formula as above — power X time X price — my tree costs less than a penny per day to light for 8 hours. Even if you have a normal-sized, 6-foot tree with six strings of lights, it’s still barely a nickel a day.

Incandescent

Incandescent holiday lights are still around, and they’re much cheaper to buy than LED. But they use more energy, and you can’t string as many of them together before you hit the limit listed on the package. (The listing organization UL, which certifies lights and thousands of other products, restricts end-to-end connections of holiday lights.)

A 25-foot, 100-light mini light string uses about 41 watts, which works out to $0.06 of electricity per 8-hour day or $1.73 per month. Larger C7 and C9 strings, at 5 to 7 watts per bulb, drive up the cost: A 25-light string of 5-watt C7 bulbs (125 watts total) costs $0.18 per day for electricity or $5.28 for the month.

How Much Would Covering My Whole House in Lights Cost?

If you use LED lights, and I suggest that you do, it will be much cheaper, but it’s still going to set you back. As a rough example, and because it sounds fun, let’s break down Clark Griswold’s famous Christmas Vacation house.

In the movie, Clark says he put up “two hundred and fifty strands of lights, one hundred individual bulbs per strand, for a grand total of twenty-five thousand individual miniature imported Italian twinkle lights.” (Yes, I do watch this movie often.)

So, how much would 25,000 lights cost to run? In 1989, the year the movie came out, every single light would have been incandescent, so we’ll calculate that first.

Incandescent

Clark says he uses 250 strands of mini lights, and we know mini incandescent lights use about 41 watts per strand.

At today’s electricity price, running 6 hours per night, the cost would be $10.82 per day — 250 x 0.041kW x 6h x $0.176/kWh = $10.82. That’s nearly $325 per month. For mini lights! If you use C7 strands at 5 watts per bulb, the cost skyrockets to $132 per day and $4000 per month.

And that’s not considering all the extra circuits you’d have to put in to make this a safe installation. (Please don’t plug them all into the same receptacle outlet like Clark did.)

LED

Your electricity costs will be dramatically lower if you decide to recreate the Griswold home with LEDs. But LEDs are pricier to buy, so you’ll be out a lot more upfront.

As for the electricity? My 100-light mini string from earlier uses 6.48 watts, so plugging 250 of them into the formula works out to $1.71 per day, or $51.32 per month.

For larger C7 lights (at approximately 2.5 watts per 25-light strand), Clark would have needed a thousand strands. Using these lights will set you back $2.64 a day and $79 a month.

Safety Considerations

The electricity cost of your holiday decorations is only half the story. Before you start stapling thousands of lights to your roof, think about safety—not just electrical safety, but ladder safety as well.

Follow manufacturer instructions about how many light strands you can string together on one circuit, which must be protected by a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). Overloading circuits with too many lights can trip your breaker, damage your lights or even start a fire. This is more of a problem with incandescents because the watts add up quickly. Even with LEDs, you may need extra circuits if you’re planning a holiday light show with music and dancing reindeer.

Examine your lights before putting them up. Replace broken bulbs, and discard strings that have exposed wiring. If half or all of the string doesn’t work, try fixing them with a Christmas light tester or changing the fuse. Clark stapled his lights with metal staples — a bad idea. Use plastic holders to avoid short circuits, and if you have any questions about circuit capacity or other safety issues, call a licensed electrician.

Is It Safe To Spray Snow On a Pre-Lit Christmas Tree? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/can-i-spray-snow-on-a-pre-lit-christmas-tree/ Tue, 17 Dec 2024 18:44:56 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=653718 Create an indoor winter wonderland in a few easy steps

The post Is It Safe To Spray Snow On a Pre-Lit Christmas Tree? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
If putting up a Christmas tree with all the decorations and twinkling lights feels like an overwhelming task, a pre-lit tree can be the answer. A pre-lit Christmas tree comes right out of the package with lights on each branch and is ready to be placed in its holiday location in any room. All you need to do is plug it in.

For a festive touch, spraying snow on a pre-lit tree can give it the look of freshly fallen snow. I like to spray snow on the edges of our tree’s branches, the greens on the mantle over the fireplace and the wreath on the front door. It gives the house the feel of a winter wonderland, with all the warmth of staying cozy inside to enjoy it.

We talked to some experts for tips on how to achieve a snow-fallen look for a pre-lit tree with snow spray in a few easy steps this holiday season.

What Is Spray Snow?

Spray snow, or faux snow, is a spray mixture used to make items look like they’ve been snowed on. Mixtures for spray snow include a combination of water, solvent, resin and filler, and the product is used to distribute a light layer of white powder that resembles snow when it dries.

Spray snow is a familiar sight at holiday time for use on store windows for displays. It can also be used on trees, wreaths, garlands and home windows to give a snow-covered look.

Can I Spray Snow a Pre-Lit Christmas Tree?

Yes, you can use spray snow on a pre-lit Christmas tree. Emmy-award-winning lighting designer Christopher Landy, owner of Vibrant Design in New York City, says any spray snow on the lights of a pre-lit tree is generally safe for holiday decorating. “I would not worry about protecting lights for functioning purposes if you spray snow over the tree or lights—they will be fine—especially LED lights, which do not get hot and are more and more the norm with lights for home decor.”

How To Use Spray Snow on a Pre-Lit Christmas Tree

“Spray snow can bring magic to a Christmas tree,” says Chadwick Boyd of Chadwick Boyd Lifestyle. “Especially now that the quality and type of materials spray snow is made of has progressed beyond an aerosol can I grew up with in the ’70s and ’80s… We have learned quite a lot from set design professionals to create magical trees worthy of our living and favorite rooms in our homes.”

Spray snow now comes in both spray can form and bags of powder-like snow material. Boyd suggests using a few common kitchen tools you probably have on hand to make the spray snow look as real as possible. “I use a colander and/or sifter to spray through to make the spray snow create the look of full-on snow, which is what most people are looking for to create a beautiful tree.”

Before you start the process of wetting the branches with a spray snow, you should cover the lights on the tree before you begin to work. “Wrap each light strand with a thin layer of plastic wrap or tissue paper, ensuring the lights are fully covered while still allowing the spray to reach the branches evenly,” Boyd says. “This will protect the lights from the snow spray while still providing a snowy appearance on the tree.”

The best way to achieve a realistic result is to use a light touch when spraying branches. “You don’t need to drench the tree with product,” Boyd says. Start at the top of the tree and spray in sections as you work your way down for the most natural look of fallen snow. “As you get further down the tree, I like to step back and identify the areas that need more snow and then go back in and spray snow those branches.”

Let the spray snow adhesive set for a few hours between applications. “Spray and repeat the process with another layer of snow,” says Boyd. “This should create the most optimal-looking snowed-on Christmas tree.”

Once the snow spray is completely dry, simply remove the wrapping from the lights.

Alternative to Spray Snow

Some other ways to give a winter sparkle to a pre-lit tree are cotton batting or strands of silver tinsel.

For the look of fluffy snow, wrap cotton batting around the branches of your tree to give the tree the effect of snow on the branches. Lightly stretch the batting to separate the cotton and secure the batting with floral wire to hold in place.

Strands of shimmering tinsel hung on branches can also give a twinkling shine to your pre-lit tree.

Frosty, flocked trees

“A snowy, flocked Christmas tree brought instant winter wonderland vibes into ’70s homes,” Bartlett says. “They make the perfect backdrop for colorful lights and playful ornaments.”

Artificial Christmas trees were big in the ’70s. While you might think it’s more environmentally friendly to flock a real Christmas tree rather than a fake one, it can’t be recycled or composted after you spray the branches. Instead, consider flocking that old artificial tree lurking in your attic or search for a second-hand one to create your winter wonderland indoors.

Shiny festoons of foil

Tinsel has been around since the early 17th century, when it was used to reflect candlelight on the tree. But, for many, tinsel and other shiny foil accents are the ultimate flamboyant ’70s Christmas decorations. Bartlett suggests draping these shimmering foil strands on your tree, staircase and mantel.

While tinsel might be the top choice for an over-the-top retro holiday design, buying it new isn’t good for the planet. “Choose biodegradable options where possible or plan for a thoughtful tidy-up to avoid adding to landfills,” Bartlett recommends.

old fashioned christmas lights

Oversized, bright bulbs

Big is beautiful when selecting holiday lighting for your ’70s Christmas decoration design. “Larger bulb lights, reminiscent of classic incandescent styles, add instant retro charm. Colored lights were especially popular in bubble, bulb, or Pickwick-inspired floral shapes,” Bartlett says. She suggests using them liberally on your tree, down the stairs and on the front porch to add some ’70s style.

Glitzy glass ornaments

“Shiny glass baubles were a staple of ’70s Christmas trees,” Bartlett says. She recommends decorating your Christmas tree with a mix of glittery styles, such as patterned onion, bulb, classic round and inverted bauble shapes to catch the light. Maybe your grandma has one-of-a-kind hand-blown and hand-painted family heirlooms she is happy to donate, or you can go thrifting to find nostalgic trinkets or buy new retro-inspired designs to reflect your style and personality.

Handcrafted classics

“The make-do-and-mend mentality of the time meant handmade decorations were a must,” Bartlett says. She explains that there wasn’t the pressure for picture-perfect Christmas displays in the ’70s as there can be with contemporary designs. “The homespun, relaxed style of the decade encouraged creativity and a playful approach to decking the halls,” she says.

Making your own ’70s-inspired Christmas decorations is fun, family-friendly, and allows you to personalize your theme. Macrame, paper chain, felted and honeycomb paper decorations are just a few materials that can add to that authentic vintage look.

Tips on How to Achieve ’70s Christmas Decorations in 2024

Follow these holiday decorating tips if you’re all stocked up on tinsel, flocking spray, big bulbs and glitter-covered Christmas ornaments but don’t know how to combine them into a cohesive design.

 • More is more: Bartlett explains that the ’70s was the era of maximalism, so don’t hold back. “When you think you’re done, add one more paper honeycomb decoration or another strand of tinsel. There’s no such thing as too much,” she says.

 • Select sparkly things: “The disco decade loved anything that shimmered and shone,” Bartlett says. You can’t go wrong with tons of tinsel and long, glittering strands of lametta. Plus, the more glittery your ornaments are, the better.

 • Express yourself: “From bold patterns to playful shapes, the ’70s embraced individuality, so don’t be afraid to show your personality through your decor,” Bartlett says. Make memories by having a festive family day designing homemade glittery, groovy baubles.

 • Be confident with color: Use the vibrant tones that dominated the decade to create a funky retro Christmas tableware design. “Warm earthy tones like orange, brown, mustard, and green were popular, as were bright rainbow shades,” Bartlett says.

A Step-By-Step Guide to Crafting a Stunning Gallery Wall https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-make-gallery-wall/ Tue, 10 Dec 2024 17:24:23 +0000 Elevate your home decor with our expert guide to designing and installing a gallery wall that captures your unique aesthetic style.

The post A Step-By-Step Guide to Crafting a Stunning Gallery Wall appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

A gallery wall transforms a blank wall into a personal narrative, far more sophisticated than randomly hanging pictures here and there. This artistic display requires careful curation, thoughtful selection, and intentional arrangement. “A gallery wall isn’t about just throwing a screw up on the wall and haphazardly placing items,” explains Melissa Franco, senior set designer and stylist at Trusted Media Brands.

The art of creating a gallery wall involves understanding how various elements work together to create a cohesive visual story. Colors, sizes, textures, and themes must harmonize to produce a statement that reflects your unique style and personality. In this project, we will walk you through the detailed process of designing and installing a stunning gallery wall, from the initial concept to the final installation.

Choosing gallery wall components

When selecting items for your gallery wall, Franco recommends an intuitive approach: “I like to pick items that speak to me and will choose more items than I think I will need.” This strategy allows maximum creative flexibility and ensures you have options during the design process.

Begin with a focal point – typically the largest or most meaningful picture or piece. This anchor will guide the composition of surrounding elements. Your gallery can encompass a diverse range of items: framed photographs, original artwork, vintage posters, sculptural pieces, mirrors, or decorative objects. Use matching picture frames and similar subject matter for a uniform, organized look or try mixing varied pieces unified by a color palette or overall aesthetic.

The key is creating a collection that tells your story. “The beauty of a gallery wall is that you can choose whatever is most important to you!” Franco notes. Whether you’re showcasing family memories, travel experiences, or artistic collections, your gallery wall should feel personal and meaningful.

Gallery Wall

Gallery wall layout

Preparation is crucial to creating a visually compelling gallery wall. Franco suggests two primary layout methods: arranging items on the floor or large table or using scale paper cutouts to map potential arrangements on the wall. This preliminary step allows you to experiment with positioning without making permanent marks.

Pay close attention to how different pieces interact. “It’s the different sizes, space between, and orientation of items that creates movement and allows your eye to travel around your gallery wall,” Franco explains. Avoid rigid, perfectly symmetrical arrangements. Instead, embrace slight asymmetry to create visual dynamism and interest.

To create a flow that guides the viewer’s eye, consider varying the size of the components, keeping consistent spacing between them, and balancing colors and textures to create visual harmony and depth.

Take time to assess your arrangement. Photograph potential layouts to help you visualize the final composition. Remember, the goal is to create a harmonious, intentional and effortless display.

Installing the gallery wall

If you have drywall with studs, use a stud finder to determine where the studs are buried under the drywall. Mark the stud locations on the wall to help you remember them as you progress with installation. It is always best to hang even moderately heavy objects from studs. However, if your desired hanging location does not line up with a stud, install the appropriate wall anchor for the object’s weight.

Drive screws through the drywall and directly into the stud. To pierce metal studs, you will need to pre-drill with a metal drill bit slightly smaller than the screw you intend to use.

If you have lath and plaster walls, they consist of small wood slats called lath that is nailed over studs and then covered with plaster. Lath can be strong and solid or brittle due to aging or dry rot. Because the lathe slats cover the studs, it may be difficult to determine where the studs are located. For lightweight objects, screws work if they seed solidly into the lathe. If the lath seems weak or brittle, go ahead and install an anchor for added insurance. Mount heavier objects directly to a stud or use an appropriate anchor.

You’ll also want some wire, specific hangers or mounts (in our case, for a skateboard and basketball) and a level to ensure everything is straight and plumb when you finally hang it on the wall. Then start hanging, starting with the middle components and working your way out, making sure that the center of your galley wall cluster is at eye level.

Franco’s most encouraging advice: “Don’t be afraid to hang it! If you make a mistake and want to move it, it’s only a hole. Patch the drywall and move on.” Embrace the process, remain flexible, and remember that your gallery wall is a reflection of your unique aesthetic journey.

FAQ

How many pictures should be on a gallery wall?

Use the size of the wall you are hanging your gallery wall on as a guide to the number of pictures it should have. Your gallery wall cluster as a whole shouldn’t exceed 60% of the available wall space not covered by furniture.

When did gallery walls start?

Gallery walls have been around in one shape or another since the 1600’s.

According to experts, good sleep improves your mood, brain performance and overall health. That’s why it’s important prioritize your sleep. And your bed is a great place to start. While a new mattress seems like the obvious solution, it is a hefty investment that might not be in your budget at the moment. Fortunately, there are other, more affordable solutions. Adding one of the best mattress toppers to your bed can significantly improve the quality of your sleep for a fraction of the cost of a new mattress. And speaking of the best, the Avocado mattress topper is one of our top picks.

Our tester used the Avocado mattress topper on his 16-year-old mattress and was seriously impressed by the comfort and support it provided. Read on for everything you need to know about the Avocado mattress topper.

What is the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper?

The Avocado mattress topper is a latex mattress topper available in a two-inch, medium-comfort option and 3-inch plush option. The medium topper is made of Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)-certified organic latex, and the plush topper is made with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified Pure Talalay latex. It has a Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified organic cotton cover with a hidden underside zipper for easy removal. The topper and cover are Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and Made Safe certified. This Avocado mattress topper is also vegan-certified, as it’s made without wool. And if you happen to prefer wool, Avocado also makes a luxurious Alpaca wool mattress topper.

Avocado Eco Organic Mattress Topper

The Avocado mattress topper is made with organic latex and cotton and is offered in medium and plush feels.

Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper Features

Eco-Friendly

Depending on the model you choose, the Avocado mattress topper is made with either GOLS and FSC-certified organic Dunlop latex or FSC-certified Pure Talalay latex. Unlike polyurethane foam or memory foam toppers, which are made from fossil fuels, the latex is natural and renewable. This means it’s better for the planet and, most importantly, better for you.

Non-Toxic

The Avocado mattress topper has been granted multiple certifications. It’s Made Safe Certified, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certified, Greenguard Gold Certified and Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified by UL Environment. This means that every topper has undergone rigorous testing and is proven to be free from toxic ingredients and pollutants. You can sleep soundly knowing that your topper is free from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, phthalates and other harmful chemicals.

Removable Cover

This topper has a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover with a hidden underside zipper. It can be removed, though the brand recommends spot cleaning only. If your cover starts looking shabby, you can purchase a replacement.

Flippable

Avocado recommends rotating and fluffing the mattress topper on a regular basis to help retain its loft. It can also be flipped.

How We Tested It

Our tester, Spencer Kildare, is a side sleeper who appreciates extra support and pressure relief. Especially since he’s been sleeping on the same spring mattress for 16 years. “My mattress is very old and worn in. It’s probably not the best to sleep on, but I have gotten accustomed to it,” he explains. “My sleep quality isn’t the best, and I sometimes feel like I’m 60% to 90% rested.”

In hopes of improving his sleep quality, Spencer ordered the 3-inch Talalay latex topper. It costs between $45 and $72 more depending on the size, but it is softer and more plush than the Dunlop latex used in the 2-inch topper. The plush Talalay topper is designed to contour and alleviate shoulder and hip pain, making it ideal for side and combination sleepers like Spencer.

The Avocado mattress topper arrived in a single box that Kildare could lift and move on his own. The topper itself was folded and wrapped in plastic. According to Kildare, it took a grand total of three minutes to get this mattress topper out of the box and centered on his bed. He did notice a factory smell, which he said was reminiscent of vanilla cake. He notes that the smell isn’t bad, but the topper needs a week or more to completely off-gas.

Spencer tested a handful of mattress toppers over the course of several weeks. The Avocado mattress topper was the final topper he tested and it stood out among the rest. “It was the most different, in terms of construction, that I slept on,” he says. “It really has a cakey sort of feel and it mushes when pressure is applied. It provided excellent support to my sides without applying excess pressure.”

After sleeping on this mattress topper for five nights and a handful of mid-day naps, Spencer found that he loved the overall quality and spongey nature of the foam filling. His sleep quality drastically improved and he found himself waking up fully rested more often than not.

Though Spencer gave this topper five stars for comfort and support, he wishes it had corner straps to keep it from moving around on his bed. “Straps! Somebody get this mattress topper some straps,” he quips. “This is a great topper, but those straps are important.” Rather than corner straps, this topper relies on well-fitted sheets to keep it in place. Treat yourself to a set of Boll & Branch sheets to keep this topper in place.

Overall, Kildare recommends the Avocado mattress topper to anyone who tends to wake up feeling stiff or sore. It starts at just $199, and given its comfort and quality, your only regret will be that you didn’t buy it sooner.

Pros

 • Comfortable and supportive
 • Made of more than 95% certified organic material
 • Oeko-Tex standard 100 and Made Safe certified
 • Available in medium and plush
 • Available in six sizes and two heights
 • Organic cotton cover can be removed and replaced
 • Vegan certified

Cons

 • Doesn’t have corner straps to hold it in place
 • Seems to run slightly large for the stated mattress size

Why You Should Trust Us

At Family Handyman, we especially value products that enhance the quality of our sleep. We’ve spent countless hours testing some of the best mattresses on the market from brands like Helix, Saatva and Purple. We’ve also tested the best mattress protectors, sheets and toppers. After thoroughly researching the best mattress toppers, we sent the Avocado mattress topper to Spencer Kildare for testing. He put this topper on his 16-year-old mattress and slept on it for five consecutive nights along with a handful of afternoon naps.

During that time, he focused on its overall comfort and performance. He also considered how easy it was to unpack and place on the bed, whether or not it had any odors and its overall value. “This is a mattress topper of excellent quality,” he concludes. “The soft cover of the topper adds to the spongey nature of the foam filling, and the covering is the most cloth-like of the bunch.”

FAQ

Which side up should I put my Avocado Mattress topper?

You can sleep on either side of the Avocado mattress topper.

How do I clean my Avocado Mattress topper?

The Avocado mattress topper and cover are spot clean only. The organic cotton cover is removable but must be spot cleaned and laid flat or hung to dry. If it becomes too soiled, you can purchase a replacement cover.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

The majority of reviewers give the Avocado mattress topper five stars. Most say it’s incredibly supportive yet soft and comfortable. Several reviewers were pleased to find that this topper instantly improved the feeling of their existing mattress, and others give high marks for the product’s overall quality and effectiveness. Moreover, many reviewers say they did not notice any off-gassing scents whatsoever.

Negative reviews tended to focus on personal preferences. Several users found the topper to be too firm while a few deemed it too soft.

Avocado Mattress Topper vs. Silk and Snow Organic Mattress Topper

If you’re looking for the best organic mattress topper, Avocado and Silk and Snow are your top two contenders. We know because we tested both of them. Both toppers are made with Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)-certified organic latex and have a GOTS certified organic cotton cover. Neither mattress topper has corner straps to keep it in place, and we found that both of them tend to slide around on the bed.

The Silk and Snow mattress topper starts at $175 and is machine washable. It comes in one thickness and two firmness levels. The Avocado mattress topper, on the other hand, starts at $199 and must be spot cleaned. You can also choose from a 2- or 3-inch thickness in addition to two firmness levels.

Final Verdict

The Avocado mattress topper is an excellent value. It’s well-constructed using non-toxic, eco-friendly materials and offers plenty of support while you sleep. It even improved the overall feel of a 16-year-old spring mattress. If this sounds like heaven, consider pairing this topper with the Avocado Green mattress.

The Company Store Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress PadWENDY ROSE GOULD FOR FAMILY HANDYMAN

Best Overall Cooling Mattress Topper

The Company Store Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress Pad

Pros:

 • Effectively cools
 • Does not change the feel of your mattress
 • Lightweight and easy to put on the bed

Cons:

 • Very thin

If you love the feel of your bed but wish it was a smidge cooler at night, The Company Store’s cooling gel memory foam mattress pad is the cooling mattress topper you’ve been dreaming of. That’s because it keeps you cool without completely changing the feel of your bed.

The Company Store Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress Pad

This topper is made of pressure-relieving memory foam that molds to the shape of your body for ultimate comfort and support. It features a breathable knit top that’s infused with cooling gel to regulate your body temperature all night long. It also has panels that cover the entire mattress and tuck under the corners easily so you can rest assured that it won’t move during the night.

“This mattress topper had a nice cooling effect but it is quite thin,” says our tester Wendy Rose Gould. “It feels more like light pad that you’re sleeping on versus a dense topper. That said, I personally love my mattress so I appreciated that this one didn’t add a lot of excess.”

The Company Store Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress Pad

Gould also appreciated how easy it was to unpack this cooling mattress topper and put it on her bed. The whole process took her about five minutes. She also noted that there were no odors or off-gassing. All she had to do was put it on her bed, add her linen sheets and she was ready to hop in. “You can tell that a lot of technology and thought went into the design,” raves Gould. “It’s comfortable and it effectively cools you at night while providing a thin layer over your mattress.”

Amazon Basics Cooling Gel Infused Memory Foam Mattress TopperWENDY ROSE GOULD FOR FAMILY HANDYMAN

Best Budget Cooling Mattress Topper

Amazon Basics Cooling Gel-Infused Memory Foam Mattress Topper

Pros:

 • Under $100
 • Made of thick, cushy memory foam
 • Mild cooling effect
 • Compact packaging

Cons:

 • Does not have a cover
 • Takes a few days to fully expand

A restful night’s sleep is a dream come true. But spending a small fortune can be a nightmare. If you’re shopping with a smaller budget, then this Amazon Basics cooling mattress topper is for you. It has a simple design — it’s essentially a giant slab of blue memory foam — but effectively keeps you cool and comfortable all night long.

Amazon Basics Cooling Gel Infused Memory Foam Mattress Topper

“It is definitely a great bang-for-your-buck option,” says Gould. “It’s a good choice for those seeking a quick cooling fix without dropping a ton of cash.”

On a scale of one to five, Gould gave this cooling mattress topper a 2 for firmness. “It’s thick, but it isn’t fancy,” she says. “It’s pretty airy and so it feels mushy. The thickness level was superior compared to other mattress toppers.”

Amazon Basics Cooling Gel Infused Memory Foam Mattress Topper

While this mattress topper is thick, cushy and cooling, Gould didn’t like the fact that it doesn’t have a protective cover. The lack of a cover led her to question the topper’s longevity. “Without an additional protective layer it’s probably going to absorb more sweat and dirt over time,” she says. “However, it’s respectably durable.”

Once you add this cooling mattress topper to your cart, you can expect it to arrive at your door tightly rolled in a compact box. The topper itself is wrapped in a protective layer of fabric and an instruction manual is included. But you will want to heed Gould’s advice: “You do need to be careful when cutting this open,” she cautions. “The snug packaging requires some surgeon-level cutting.”

Puffy Deluxe Mattress TopperWENDY ROSE GOULD FOR FAMILY HANDYMAN

Best Memory Foam Cooling Mattress Topper

Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper

Pros:

 • 2.5 inches of memory foam
 • Offered in firm or soft feels
 • Soft, cushy cover
 • Elastic bands and corner pockets keep it snugly on the mattress

Cons:

 • Cooling effect may be too subtle for very hot sleepers

If you enjoy snuggling up in body-hugging memory foam, then you’ll love this Puffy mattress topper. It’s made of 2.5 inches of pressure-relieving memory foam and is available with a firm or soft feel. And its ultra-soft cover is the icing on the, well, bed.

Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper

“I give this a 5 out of 5 for comfort,” raves Gould. “This was my favorite mattress topper by far. It has a moderate firmness, which I like, thanks to responsive memory foam and its soft, cushy cover.” In fact, Gould loved this topper so much that when she finished all of her testing, this is the topper she chose for long-term use. “I loved my bed before, but this somehow made it even more comfortable. I look forward to going to bed every night because of how comfortable it is,” she raves.

Gould describes this cooling mattress topper as well-made and comfortable with a nice, subtle cooling effect. She especially loved how it stayed put once on her bed. “It fits across the entire mattress and stays snug thanks to the elastic bands and corner pockets that tuck over each corner of the bed,” she explains. “That topper is going nowhere!”

Bedelite Cooling Mattress TopperWENDY ROSE GOULD FOR FAMILY HANDYMAN

Best Plush Cooling Mattress Topper

Bedelite Cooling Mattress Topper

Pros:

 • Down alternative filling gives it a pillow-y feel
 • Very nice cooling effect
 • Has side panels that cover the entire mattress
 • Affordable

Cons:

 • Not as full or plush as shown online

Memory foam isn’t for everyone. If you prefer something more plush, this Bedelite mattress topper feels like a cloud on your bed. Down alternative filling gives this mattress topper a pillow-y feel while breathable cooling fabric keeps you comfortable. Plus, the long, sheet-like side panels on each side help it cover and stay on your mattress.

Bedelite Cooling Mattress Topper

“It has a nice cooling effect and provides a very light layer of cushion underneath,” says Gould. “It enhances a mattress that’s already comfortable. My mattress is very comfortable, so the pairing worked well.”

Bedelite Cooling Mattress Topper

Gould adds that while this cooling mattress topper feels more like a comforter than a dense foam, it’s not as full or fluffy as shown online. “In the pictures, this mattress topper looks very full. However, it’s not as thick or plush-looking in real life. It did get slightly better over a few days, but not nearly as fluffy as the pictures show.”

In spite of it not being as puffy as shown online, this mattress topper is still one of Gould’s top picks, especially given the affordable price tag. “This is a great option. Instead of the dense foam you sink into, this is essentially a puffy comforter filled with alternative down,” she raves. “The cooling effect is very nice — one of the best that I tried! It’s a good choice for those who want only a little extra cushion over their mattress and some cooling.”

Perfectly Snug Smart Mattress TopperWENDY ROSE GOULD FOR FAMILY HANDYMAN

Best Smart Cooling Mattress Topper

Perfectly Snug The Smart Topper

Pros:

 • Has a built-in cooling fan
 • Each side is customizable
 • Has a warming feature
 • Operates with or without the app

Cons:

 • Expensive
 • Has a hard mechanical box at the foot

Tech enthusiasts will love the Perfectly Snug Smart Mattress Topper. It has a built-in fan that cools or heats your bed and dual zones so you and your partner can sleep comfortably. There are three cool fan settings, as well as warm and hot settings, allowing you to find your perfect temperature.

Perfectly Snug Smart Mattress Topper

“It’s definitely the most tech-y way to cool,” says Gould. “Whereas most mattress toppers rely on a cooling gel, this one cools you down with a fan built into the topper itself. The fan mechanism creates a cooling sensation through the night similar to a regular fan, but helps under the covers, too.”

Perfectly Snug Smart Mattress Topper

This smart topper features a 3D mesh layer, which allows active air flow and a comfortable layer of memory foam, all wrapped in a soft polyester cover. It has two connection ports — one for each sleeper — that need to be plugged into a double-sided cord. The brand recommends downloading their app before use though you can use this topper with or without the app.

While this topper is sure to keep you as cool or as warm as you prefer, there are a few things you may want to consider. “I like that it provides a higher-tech experience, and that you can customize each side for either sleeper,” says Gould. “But you could feel the hard mechanical box at the foot of the bed. If you’re very tall this would be especially frustrating, but it’s still apparent in some sleep positions even as a short person.”

Like many smart products and bed cooling systems, this topper doesn’t come cheap. It starts at $1,399 for a twin size, so be sure to keep your eye out for sales.

What to Look for When Buying a Cooling Mattress Topper

 • Cooling features: Many mattress toppers are made from memory foam or latex which can trap heat. Marten Carlson, a Mattress Expert and a Certified Sleep Science Coach at Mattress Clarity, advises looking for features like cooling gel foam, copper- or graphite-infused foam, or aerated foam. “While each of these materials works differently, they can all help maintain a temperature-controlled sleeping environment throughout the night,” he explains.
 • Thickness: According to Nichole Mondshein, a Sleep Product Expert at Sleepopolis, the thickness of the topper you choose can also influence its cooling performance. “A thinner topper tends to be more breathable, as it allows for more airflow and prevents you from sinking too deeply into the material,” she explains. If you prefer something thicker, opt for a cooling gel option, recommends Mondshein. “The deeper you sink into the material, the more heat is likely to be trapped,” she says.

4 Interior Design Trends For 2025 Classic Elegance Gettyimages 522915858

Classic Elegance

Classic elegance is the first of the interior design trends for 2025 that Fishburne identifies. “This timeless trend emphasizes high-quality, classic decor that feels like a lasting investment and will transcend time,” Fishburne begins. She explains that classic elegance focuses on personal style rather than rapidly changing trends. Homeowners who embrace this often opt for “pieces that reflect their taste by modernizing artisanal and handcrafted pieces with a new color or finish.”

She also notes that “formal dining rooms are making a comeback, aligning with the rise of broken floor plans and the desire for spaces dedicated to family connection.”

If you want to embrace this in your home, Fishburne recommends opting for “warmer, bolder colors that balance the minimalism of the 2010s, or try color drenching – a monochromatic approach.” She also suggests “rich textures, tactile fabrics and durable materials like warm or dark complex stones mixed with wood finishes complete the look, growing more beautiful with time.”

4 Interior Design Trends For 2025 Modern Embrace Gettyimages 960852736

Modern Embrace

If a return to classic elegance chafes you, but you do like some of the more timeless elements, you may want to opt for the modern embrace. Fishburne describes it as a trend “grounded in familiarity and timeless details like herringbone floors, thicker trim and wall paneling” but also notes that it is “shifting toward a softer, more approachable aesthetic.”

To emulate this 2025 interior design trend, think natural and fluid. Fishburne suggests “organic shapes, soft curves and mixing and matching globally inspired decor, textiles and furniture.” Homeowners can also incorporate hints of luxury by opting for “elevated textiles, live greenery and opulent yet cozy elements.”

When it comes to color palettes, she says to opt for nature-inspired colors: “Warm browns, complex whites, terra cottas and olive greens.” When in doubt, circle back to “artisanal furniture and decor that emphasizes natural and original architecture” because this style can “add depth and character to a modern yet inviting home.”

4 Interior Design Trends For 2025 Cozy Cottage Gettyimages 1448485337

Cozy Cottage

Next on the list of upcoming interior design trends for 2025 is a cozy cottage feel. According to Fishburne, this is a trend that “reimagines traditional farmhouse and cottage aesthetics with a fresh, classic approach that prioritizes comfort, casualness, warmth, ambience and a touch of luxury.”

She says this trend is gaining traction because “homeowners are moving away from industrial and minimal styles.” In their place, they are instead looking “toward unique, hand-crafted designs inspired by Shaker, prairie and country influences.”

To incorporate this into your home, Fishburne recommends opting for “natural fibers, applied molding, brick and stone and real plants” in order to “create an inviting, lived-in feel.” To help these touches blend seamlessly between old and new influences, try to include “prints and patterns like florals, bold stripes and updated geometrics.”

In short, “design is layered, displaying collectibles that add character to the home,” and “the palette blends soft, atmospheric hues with grounding natural tones.”

Vintage Deluxe

The final interior design trend Fishburne identifies is vintage deluxe. “This trend balances opulence with timeless elegance, appealing to consumers who value investments that feel special while staying in vogue for years to come.”

Like some of the other trends on this list that foil today’s hot ideas, vintage deluxe represents a shift “away from extreme maximalism.” Rather, this trend “embraces Quiet Luxury—classic, understated designs that nod to the past while looking to the future.”

To bring a vintage deluxe feel into your home, consider “classic pieces that you can build around and transform over the years.” Fishburne also suggests finding “dark and burl woods, luxurious and rich textiles, subdued patterns, rich complex stones and overscale furniture with traditional shapes that evolve over time.”

This trend sits at the intersection of a few different styles. “Reimagined vintage-inspired fixtures with exposed flathead screws, rivets, knurling, hex bolts and other metal details” set the stage, bringing in “a sense of craftsmanship and character.” These details then pair incredibly well with “softened Art Deco and Neo-classical details.” Here, you should be looking out for “organic pastel or mineral tones, sepia hues, clipped corners, oversized fluting, gentle rounded curves and flowing lines.”

Overall, this blend of styles gives the vintage deluxe trend “a timeless yet approachable sophistication that feels both soothing and refined.”

Tips and Tricks to Keep Your Holiday Inflatables Looking Festive for Years https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/holiday-inflatables/ Thu, 21 Nov 2024 20:31:02 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=641669 Ensure your holiday inflatables remain a cherished part of your seasonal decor with our complete guide to maintenance, storage, and repair.

The post Tips and Tricks to Keep Your Holiday Inflatables Looking Festive for Years appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

Inflatables, inflatables, inflatables! Have you noticed how inflatables seem to be a part of holiday decor every season? Big ones, small ones. Halloween, Christmas, cartoon characters, fantastical! They are not cheap, and truth be told, the biggest challenge to having inflatables in your front yard is they are fragile. Some inflatables are even delicate. The question is, after investing in decorative inflatables, how do you take care of them to ensure your investment lasts for more than one season?”

Most inflatable yard decorations are made from durable, waterproof nylon or other synthetic materials so they can resist rain. However, the true secret to having your inflatable around for more than one season is how you take care of it when it is up and how you store it during the off-season.

Here are a few tips to protect your inflatable investment and ensure the fun lasts more than one season.

Before you use your inflatable

 • Read the directions and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for exposure to extreme temperatures and moisture, such as snow, ice or rain.
 • Location, location! Choose a flat, clean area far away from Christmas trees and other sharp objects to display your inflatable.
 • Check for tears and rips at the start of each new season. Small holes will prevent the inflatable from properly filling, and over time, small holes will become bigger holes.
 • Everything has a limit. Follow recommended weight limits, restrictions and recommendations.

When setting up your inflatable

 • Always secure inflatables with stakes well seeded into the ground. For added peace of mind, feel free to use additional stakes and a mallet to seed them into the ground and stronger nylon rope.
 • Be aware of securing the rope too tightly—the tension may stretch or cause the inflatable to tear. Although inflatables come with a basic set of stakes and nylon twine, you may consider getting more and adding them to your installation.
 • Keep your inflatable away from heat. This means open flames, fire pits, heaters and furnaces. Even extended periods of time in the direct sun can do long-term damage to your inflatable. The sun weakens the nylon and vinyl materials, making them more prone to tears and compromising the seams. You can’t fully avoid the sun, but be conscious of the damage it can do.
 • Make sure nothing is around the fan that could find its way into the fan housing and prevent the fan from spinning. Check for small sticks and dry leaves. If you can access the inside of the fan housing, it is a good idea to reinforce the seam between the fan and the fabric, as it will see the most strain.
 • Inflatables are not meant to be jumped on. To prevent seams from bursting or accidentally deflating your inflatable, avoid applying unnecessary pressure. You’d be surprised how easily parts can come loose or seams can pop. Even a small rip or tear can prevent your inflatable from filling and holding air, which will prevent it from displaying properly.
 • Pets are curious creatures, which means it is best to keep them away from your inflatables.

When Setting Up Your Inflatable

Know when NOT to use your inflatable

 • Inflatables are NOT meant to withstand all types of weather exposure. Be sure to put your inflatable away before stormy weather, including high winds, thunderstorms, tornadoes, snow, heavy rain, or hail.
 • Inflatables don’t do well in any extreme. Exposure to high temperatures can and will damage an inflatable.

How to store holiday inflatables

 • When it is time to store your inflatable with your other holiday decorations at the end of the season, make sure it is clean and fully dry before you store it in the included bag or a plastic storage bin.
 • To clean the inflatable, use water, mild soap and 1/2 teaspoon of vinegar. Use an all-purpose cleaning cloth or soft sponge, and make sure the inflatable is clean. Let it air dry thoroughly before storing it. Mildew and mold can easily form if the inflatable is stored while still damp. It is harder to get rid of mold than it is to prevent it. Try to keep the original box with instructions and all moving pieces together. You may also consider a plastic storage bin with a snap-in-place lid to keep it dry and clean during the offseason.

How To Repair Holiday Inflatables

How to repair holiday inflatables

 • Some inflatables come with small repair and patch kits for holes and tears in the material. Another option for repairs is flexible tape, such as electric or duct tape—they come in many colors to match the section you are repairing or reinforcing. Whenever possible, attack repairs from the inside out; this will help the repair last longer.
 • If the fan or blower stops working, check for sticks or debris in the fan housing that are preventing the blades from spinning. For ultimate safety, make sure the fan is unplugged when troubleshooting issues.
 • Make sure your extension cord and outlet are working properly. Use an extension cord protector to protect the plug connection from moisture.

How To Repair Holiday Inflatables

FAQ

Are all inflatables created equally?

No, the quality and durability of inflatables vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some fabrics and materials are more durable than others. Take advantage of inflatables on display and inspect the quality. A thicker material will probably hold up better.

How long do inflatables last?

High-quality inflatables can last five to ten years if taken care of and stored well. The time frame will vary based on the material used to manufacture the inflatable.

Should inflatables be turned off during the day?

The answer is not whether you should have your inflatable on or off during the day. The more important answer is how long to run your fan. Most manufacturers recommend running the fan for eight hours to avoid overheating or short-circuiting your inflatable. Power surges during thunderstorms may also affect how well your inflatable fan runs.

8 Ways to Nail ’90s Holiday Decor This Christmas https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/1990s-christmas-decor/ Thu, 21 Nov 2024 17:40:48 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=listicle&p=649919 Nothing beats '90s Christmas decorations! Find out how to recreate Christmas from this iconic era with the right accessories, lights, and ornaments.

Have Yourself A Very 1990s Inspired Christmas Colorful Decor Gettyimages 518657515

Colorful Decor

Christmas decorations in the ’90s were all about color! Traditional Christmas colors like red, green and gold were abundant, but all the other colors of the rainbow were included as well. Recreate the look by living by the more is more code: colorful lights, gaudy wrapping paper, and tree ornaments that didn’t follow a strict color scheme.

What Makes It ’90s: Before we started limiting our Christmas decor to white, metallics and neutrals, color was king in the ’90s.

Have Yourself A Very 1990s Inspired Christmas Poinsettias Gettyimages 2157341303

Poinsettias

Decorating with poinsettias will always be a classic Christmas staple, but they really shined in the ’90s. There was no such thing as too many poinsettias; we put them on the fireplace, the dining table, the front porch and even the tree (my mom had faux poinsettia floral picks that we used every year).

What Makes It ’90s: We didn’t overthink Christmas decor in the ’90s, and poinsettias were affordable and traditionally festive, which is why they’re still a great decor option.

Have Yourself A Very 1990s Inspired Christmas Extra Festive Table Settings Gettyimages 182175789

Extra Festive Table Settings

Just like all ’90s Christmas decorations, the table settings were adorned to the max. Matching plates, red and green glassware, large centerpieces, and layers upon layers of Christmas linens made for a very full and cheerful table that bordered on garish (and I mean that in the best way possible). You can use a little more restraint for your table this year but don’t hold back too much if you want that ’90s to feel.

What Makes It ’90s: Traditional red, green, and gold was the color scheme of choice for a ’90s Christmas dinner tablescape. Linen and glassware patterns like plaid, holly leaves, and reindeer were also popular.

Have Yourself A Very 1990s Inspired Christmas Quilted Stockings Gettyimages 1819358482

Quilted Stockings

Crafty country decor was big in the ’90s—think gingham, carved wood accessories, baskets, and faux ivy. The country style bled into Christmas decor as well, specifically quilted stockings. The stockings had the same look as a traditional quilted blanket with sewing marks and some kind of cute character on the front; mine had a teddy bear!

What Makes It ’90s: Eclectic, cozy decor has been rebranded these days as “cottage-core” or “vintage farmhouse,” but the ’90s country craft fair aesthetic will always be the real deal in my book.

Have Yourself A Very 1990s Inspired Christmas Figurine Ornaments Gettyimages 1048138196

Figurine Ornaments

Ornaments shaped in different figurines are certainly not isolated to the 1990s, but they were popular during the decade and a great way to recreate a ’90s-style Christmas tree. Glass, plastic, and wood ornaments shaped in all sorts of different characters, animals, and classic Christmas objects filled the tree. No matching is needed!

What Makes It ’90s: These figurine ornaments often had a personalized element as well, labeled with the receiver’s first name or the year it was purchased.

Have Yourself A Very 1990s Inspired Christmas Mini Village Gettyimages 1194647297

Mini Village

A mini Christmas village made up of ceramic houses, storefronts and miniature people is an iconic ’90s Christmas decoration. My grandpa would buy new additions for his village every year. The houses often have a bulb inside so the windows light up and look extra cozy at night.

What Makes It ’90s: The mini Christmas village actually originated in Germany in the 16th century, but it was a Christmas decor staple in the ’90s. And don’t forget the fake snow!

Burgundy and Hunter Green

Burgundy and hunter green are synonymous with the ’90s in both home design and Christmas decorations. The perfect example is the interior of Kevin’s house in the classic ’90s Christmas movie Home Alone. This ’90s colorway is having a comeback in Christmas decor, as shown in this tour of her local At Home store by @victoriasvineswreathco.

What Makes It ’90s: Many 1990s homes had burgundy accent walls and hunter green furniture. This color pairing works well for Christmas decor—a fun nod to the era with a sophisticated twist.

’90s Thrift Store Finds

You can find an abundance of genuine ’90s Christmas decorations at your local thrift store. Watch as @jessicandesigns shows off her haul of candles, baskets, greenery and ornaments, all from the 1990s. Thrifting is a great way to recreate the ’90s on a budget, and you’ll be using the real thing instead of a knock-off.

What Makes It ’90s: The fun thing about ’90s thrifting is you don’t have to worry about perfectly coordinated pieces. The goal is for a mishmash of trinkets and baubles to create colorful and chaotic Christmas decor.

A DIYers Guide to Making Kokedama Masterpieces https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/kokedama/ Tue, 19 Nov 2024 18:44:36 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=644194 Get to know the essential techniques on how to make a kokedama and add a touch of zen to your home's decor.

The post A DIYers Guide to Making Kokedama Masterpieces appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

For plant enthusiasts, Kokedama offers a creative and visually appealing way to incorporate greenery into your home. Kokedama is a unique houseplant trend that focuses on how you plant and display your leafy companions. Rather than using pots, Kokedama involves wrapping the plant’s root system in a moss-covered soil ball, resulting in a natural and visually striking presentation.

This method allows you to easily add a touch of living, thriving vegetation to any space in an artistic, unconventional manner. Embracing the Kokedama style can be an excellent way to bring more vibrancy and life into your living environment through the display of your beloved houseplants.

What Is a Kokedama?

Kokedama bares its roots in Japan and is a many centuries old garden art. Most recently, the concept of Kokedama gardening has come into popularity in the west. Known for its beauty, kokedama literally means “moss ball” in Japanese. It is also known as “Poor Man’s Bonsai” or “String Garden” as most Kokedama gardens seem to float in the air when they are hung with transparent fishing line.

The curious thing about Kokedama is the learning curve lies in making your first one. Once you figure out the dirt mix and how to form your ball shape, it can become addictive because you want to have more and more. Find the right combination of water and light and you will find successful Kokedamas can live for years. Here are some tips and trick to starting you very own indoor Kokedama garden.

Mix the soil

Mix together one part bonsai soil, one part peat moss, and half part potting soil.

These soil ingredients combine to create good drainage and aeration, which is crucial to prevent root rot, support excellent moisture retention, and allow roots to stay moist between waterings. They are also lightweight and sturdy, which makes them easy to hang.

Add small amounts of water as you go and combine to a thickness where the soil clumps together. You will know your dirt soil mix is to the right consistency when you press it in to your hand and it stays together in a tight shape. Press and form a dirt ball five to six inches in diameter.

Prep the plant

Prep the plant by cleaning off as much of the potting dirt around the roots as possible. Do this over a tray or bucket for easy cleanup. This will allow you to tuck the rootball into the newly formed Kokedama ball.

Plant the kokedama

Lay out a single layer of cheesecloth large enough to cover the entire ball. Transfer the Kokedama ball to the center.

With the Kokedama ball of dirt now over the cheesecloth, use your hands or a small garden shovel to gently excavate a hole large enough to accommodate the roots of your plant (and a few expanded clay pebbles) in the center of the ball. Place your plant and clay pebbles in the hole, and gently pack and compress the dirt around the rootball. Make sure the roots are snug and completely covered by the soil but not so tight that they bulge out the top of the ball of soil.

Wrap the kokedama in cheese cloth

To help maintain the formed Kokedama ball and ensure it stays snug around your plant’s root ball, wrap the ball with the sheet of cheesecloth. Temporarily tie some twine around the top to secure it around the stalk of your plant. You will remove this string later when the moss has been secured around the plant. Do not worry if the shape of your Kokedama balls is not perfect at this stage.

Bring Your Houseplant Game Up A Notch With A Diy Kokedama Fhmfebmar25 Dr 10 22 15b

Cover it with moss and twine

With the roots nicely tucked into the Kokedama ball, cover the entire ball with sheets of moss, securing them with jute twine. Jute twine will hold the moss in place and help create the ball shape you desire for your Kokedama. Feel free to tie knots in the twine as you see fit to draw the ball together in a nice round shape and secure the loose ends before trimming them with shears.

Once the moss has been secured, remove the string you placed around the cheesecloth in the previous step. This will allow the plant to stretch and grow without being restricted.

Pro Tip: Misting the moss with water before you wrap it around the ball of dirt will make it pliable and help it conform to the desired shape.

Hanging kokedama plants (optional)

You can make your Kokedama appear to be floating by hanging it from a ceiling or window using a fishing line. Use twine to tightly knot it and the fishing line together. Experiment with the balance by moving the fishing line or wrapping it around the twine. Though barely visible, the fishing line does all of the heavy lifting, so ensure that you select a line with a weight rating that is capable of supporting your kokodama following a watering.

Kokedama care

Watering
A with all plants, watering every Kokedama plant will differ. However, ideally, once or twice a week take your Kokedama down and let it soak in a tray of room temperature water. Water will automatically be drawn up into the Kokedama ball. You may also use a watering can and water from above to make sure the ball is saturated with moisture.

Take the Kokedama ball out of the water and let it drain for about 30 minutes. To avoid a mess with water dripping all over when you go to hang it back up, make sure the Kokedama is no longer dripping. Plants take in water from their roots and via their leaves. In between regular watering, make it a habit to mist the leaves of your plant.

Light
Avoid a plant that wants full sunlight as the dirt will probably dry out very quickly and you will have to water more frequently. The best plant candidate for a Kokedama is a plant that enjoys partial to full shade. If you place your Kokedama where sunlight will hit it directly, filter the sunlight through a sheer curtain or shade.

FAQ

How do I hang or display a Kokedama?

Part of the charm to Kokedama plants is the illusion of it seeming to float in the air. Most hang their Kokedama with fishing line because it is strong and clear which makes it seem to disappear when a few feet away. Other creative ways of hanging a Kokedama are hanging from the middle of a picture frame or neatly placed onto a stone or wood dish. The most important thing to keep in mind about where you display your Kokedama is how easy it is to remove and replace it when watering.

What are the best plants for Kokedama?

Choose plants that prefer partial to full shade. My project utilized Elephant Ear (Alocasia Polly), Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata), and Ficus Tree Bonsai (Ficus Retusa Bonsai); however, there are a number of other plants that would be suitable, such as Orchids (Phalaenopsis), African violets (Saint Paulia ionantha), Hedera Helix, Spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum), and herbs such as Basil, Thyme, or Mint.

What kind of moss works best for kokedama?

You will find moss sheets sold in two forms. One is alive and shipped damp. Live moss arrives moist with dirt on the back of it. It comes in sheets, but they fall apart easily. The second form is dried moss sheets. They are usually more vibrant in green because they have been dyed. They do not have any dirt attached to them and you will find the green dye is released into the water when watering. Both dried and fresh moss will conform better if misted before use. Try them both before you decide which you prefer. I combined them for some of my Kokedama plants and it worked well.

If Your Walls Feel Naked After the Holidays, Try This Easy Joanna Gaines Hack https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/joanna-gaines-post-holiday-decor-hack/ Tue, 05 Nov 2024 17:49:44 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=646157 If you struggle to figure out how to decorate after the holidays, but don't want to leave your walls blank, Joanna Gaines has a hack for you.

The post If Your Walls Feel Naked After the Holidays, Try This Easy Joanna Gaines Hack appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
You can always count on Joanna Gaines for easy DIY holiday home decor hacks. So, if you’re someone who loves specific holiday decorations over the more broad seasonal options, fear not. You won’t have to settle for bare walls in the interim between the winter holidays and Valentine’s Day.

Joanna Gaines Post-Holiday Decor Hack

Gaines posted a video of herself putting a large tree branch in a vase to add some decor to the walls. It’s a cheap and easy way to create a statement piece along a wall and prevent your home from feeling bare while you wait for the next decoration-heavy holiday to roll around.

Gaines elaborated a bit on the hack in her caption, including some advice on what NOT to do: “If your home feels a little naked after the holidays, cut a branch and stick it in a vase. Don’t screw it in the wall like I did though. That’s a little too far.😅”

This hack is perfect if you gravitate toward nature-inspired decor and flowers. It essentially takes that idea one step further and elevates it from some florals in a small vase to an eye-catching statement piece that fills up an otherwise empty wall.

Recreate the Hack at Home

If it’s legal and safe to do so, you can cut and collect a branch from outside. Ideally, you’ve got your own trees that you can pull from, but if you don’t, you can try asking one of your neighbors for a branch instead. This is the cheapest and easiest way to achieve the look.

Gaines picked a branch that still had plenty of leaves on it to really make the piece feel as full as possible. Depending on your climate, you might have to go for an evergreen tree branch or a similar type of tree that still carries its leaves in colder weather. If you live somewhere warm, you’ve probably got many more options available to you.

Either way, ensure the branch you pick fits into your choice of vase. Gaines uses a wide-necked metallic vase in her video. It’s shaped almost like a wine decanter, but it’s still open enough to accommodate the branch she selected. Be sure that your branch isn’t too top-heavy; Gaines screwed hers into the wall but says that you likely won’t need to do that for yours; just keep weight and proportions in mind as you recreate her hack.

Bring The Outdoors In with Artificial Turf https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bring-the-outdoors-in-with-artificial-turf/ Wed, 30 Oct 2024 14:26:19 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=644533 From play rooms to indoor putting greens, find out how to use artificial turf inside your home.

The post Bring The Outdoors In with Artificial Turf appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
If you’ve ever been to an indoor football or soccer arena, you’ve probably seen artificial turf in action. The fake, maintenance-free grass looks like the real thing; but without the need of sun, water or mowing. But using artificial turf indoors goes beyond professional sports. Artificial grass is a fun material to experiment with in your own home as an accent material, flooring option, or wall covering. We spoke to Blerta Morina, an expert in indoor and outdoor construction products, to guide us on how to use this unique product for your indoor DIY projects.

What Is Artificial Turf?

Artificial turf is a man-made material designed to look and feel like real grass. The green plastic blades (most commonly made with nylon, polypropylene, or polyethylene) are woven through a permeable backing system that allows drainage (important when used outdoors). Infill material acts as the “soil” providing weight and traction, and it comes in a variety of options, including rubber, cork and coconut.

There are a wide range of quality and price points when it comes to artificial turf. From the extremely high-end products used in professional sports arenas, to mid-range and affordable options available at home improvement stores. For DIY home project purposes, artificial turf will cost anywhere from $2 to $20 per square foot.

Why Use Artificial Turf Indoors?

Like artificial plants, artificial turf is a way to bring the outdoors in — only without worrying about maintenance, watering or sunlight, so your grass is always greener! It looks great in home gyms, kids spaces, or even used as unique wall decor.

“The best type of artificial turf for indoor spaces is typically polyethylene,” says Morina. “It’s soft to the touch, durable enough for high traffic, and looks natural without feeling too harsh underfoot.”

Installation is fairly simple, similar to laying carpet. “Make sure the surface is clean and flat, then roll out the turf. Adhesive is optional, but if you’re covering walls or furniture, staples or screws will do the trick,” says Morina.

Tips for Using Artificial Turf Indoors

So where and how should you use artificial turf indoors throughout your home? From small scale applications to entire rooms, it’s a fun material to use creatively. Here are a few of our favorite ways to incorporate it into different room designs.

Indoor Garden

The most obvious use for indoor grass is to pair it with other plants, whether they’re living or artificial. “For plant lovers, imagine using it as the base for an indoor garden or herb corner,” says Morina,”It not only defines the space but also adds a lush, green backdrop that makes your plants stand out even more. Plus, it helps keep things neat when watering and tending to your plants.”

Indoor Putting Green

Artificial turf is a dream for golf-lovers! “Artificial turf transforms a spare room into an indoor putting green, allowing you to practice your short game whenever you like—rain or shine. It’s also a fun way to bring the family together or entertain friends,” says Morina.

Wall Decor

A vertical garden makes a big impact in any room, but the installation and care can be complicated and time-consuming. Instead, use artificial turf as a wall covering to make “living” art.

“Whether it’s in a family room, home office, or even a patio area, a green wall adds texture and a sense of nature indoors. Pair it with some hanging lights or faux ivy, and you’ve got a cool, nature-inspired feature wall that feels fresh and unique,” says Morina.

Kids’ Space

Kids love playing on soft, green grass—so why not bring it inside? Artificial turf used in a kids’ room or play room means they can enjoy grass year-round.

“Synthetic grass can turn a playroom into a mini outdoor adventure zone—without ever stepping outside,” says Morina, “It’s soft, durable, and adds a playful energy to the room. You can cover the entire floor or just lay down a few grass rugs for accent.”

Modern Furniture Materials and Open Floor Plans Are Making House Fires Worse https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/fire-safety-furniture-synthetic-materials/ Sat, 26 Oct 2024 07:04:22 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=644678 From drapes to couch cushions, synthetic materials are fueling hotter fires that burn much faster.

]]>
If you’re in the market for a new couch or a kitchen table, you might want to take a closer look at what it’s made of before buying it. Manufacturers are using more plastics and other petroleum-based products to produce much of the cheaper, lighter furniture available these days, and those can make fires burn faster and more intensely, leading fire experts to sound the alarm.

Firefighters in Las Vegas, Nevada, echoed that warning this week in the wake of a deadly house fire that killed four people. Despite responding within five minutes of receiving the call, the fire department was unable to get through the front door because of the heat, according to a report from KSNV News in Las Vegas.

“It’s not unheard of for a fire to go that quickly,” an official with the fire department told the local news. “Fires, especially in modern homes, with modern finishes, that burn very hot.”

Rather than natural fabrics, much upholstery found on furniture today is polyester fabric covering up cushions made of polyurethane foam. Lighter and cheaper tables, bookcases, television stands, etc. are often made from synthetic materials, too. And you’ll find plenty of other plastics, resins and other synthetic materials in everything from picture frames to electronics. Together, these materials make fires move much faster and burn as much as eight times hotter than in homes just a generation ago.

In addition to intensifying the heat from a fire and burning faster, those synthetic materials create more smoke than natural materials and contain toxic carcinogens. Smoke builds up faster as these materials burn, and the chemicals it contains stick around long after the flames have been extinguished.

In 2020, the Fire Safety Research Institute conducted an updated demonstration of just how quick and intense house fires can be because of these materials, an updated version of the test conducted by the FSRI in 2009. The FSRI did a side-by-side comparison lighting two, equally-sized rooms with nearly a identical setup, except one room contained furnishings made primarily from synthetic materials and the other using furniture made from natural materials to demonstrate the flashover times for each one. (FSRI defines flashover as “the transition phase in the development of a room fire in which fuel surfaces, exposed to thermal radiation from fire gases in excess of 600 degrees C (approximately 1100 degrees F), reach ignition almost simultaneously and fire spreads rapidly through the space.”)

In five different tests, the room containing furnishing made with natural materials reached flashpoint in just under 30 minutes, versus less than five minutes for the room setup with synthetic furnishings. In one trial, the room with synthetic furnishings reached the flashpoint in three minutes and 20 seconds. You can see the video of the experiment below.

Another risk factor common in modern homes is the open floor plan. With fewer barriers between rooms, fires are less contained because they’re not compartmentalized. Flames and smoke spread much faster when they ignite in larger, open areas. It also makes it harder for firefighters to control the fire.

Fire Safety

Understandably, it’s hard to avoid synthetic materials in your home entirely, and going out and replacing all of your furnishings in one swoop isn’t realistic for most of us. But there are steps you can take to help keep you safe.

Smoke detectors: Firefighters and fire safety experts all stress the importance of having working smoke detectors throughout your home. At a minimum, you should have a smoke alarm on every level of your house. It’s also a good idea to have one in each bedroom and one in any hallways that sleeping areas open into. Be sure to test your smoke alarms regularly and change the batteries twice a year, unless it’s hardwired.

Escape plan: Make sure you have fire escape plan with well-defined escape routes. You may need to plan different escape paths for different bedrooms and parts of the home. And make sure everyone in the house knows the escape plan and understands what to do in case of an emergency.

Fire-protected furniture: If you are looking for new furniture, curtains, etc., read and understand the label. Look for natural materials or fire-protected furniture. You can also look for products made under the Upholstered Furniture Action Council (UFAC) program or that meet the requirements laid out by the California Bureau of Home Furnishings.

Avoid fire risks: Be aware of the fire hazards in your home and take steps to avoid them. That includes measures like turning off space heaters when you’re not in the room with them and keeping them away from curtains, clothing, bedding, etc. Space heaters are one of the most common causes of house fires in the United States. You should also be aware of hazards like unprotected outlets and overloaded circuits, things than can cause electrical fires in your home.

Help! My Neighbor’s Holiday Decorations Are Out of Control https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/neighbor-holiday-decorations-out-of-control/ Fri, 11 Oct 2024 21:33:41 +0000 Your neighbor's holiday decorations are festive and fun, but they're too big and far too loud. Is there anything you can do?

The post Help! My Neighbor’s Holiday Decorations Are Out of Control appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Getting festive and decorating for the holidays is a cherished tradition, but once in a while, there’s a neighbor that goes way too far. If one of your neighbor’s holiday decorations is too noisy late at night or making the block appear bright as day at all hours of the night, it may be time to do something about it.

So, what’s the best way to get the problem fixed promptly? Here are some steps you can try.

Confirm the Rules and Regulations

Just because your neighbor’s decorations are inconvenient doesn’t necessarily mean they’re against the rules or breaking any laws. Go to your city’s website and check out the rules and regulations regarding quiet hours and bright lighting late at night. If you are part of a homeowner’s association, you’ll also want to check its rules and regulations.

Confirm You Aren’t the Problem

Before you complain about your neighbor’s decor, confirm that your own holiday decorations aren’t causing issues.

 • Make sure your lights and sounds turn off at or before city quiet hours.
 • Ensure your decorations don’t creep onto the sidewalk or your neighbors’ yards.

If your decorations are also out of control, it’ll damper any requests you make. You can’t ask your neighbor to tone down their decorations if you’ve also gone over the top.

You should also take a beat and consider whether your request is reasonable. Sit with it for a moment, and then go to a trusted friend who you know will be honest with you. Holiday decorations aren’t generally up for more than a few weeks, so if your neighbor isn’t in violation of any ordinances and the people around you don’t share your opinion about the extent of the problem, you may want to consider letting your neighbor’s annoying decorations slide to avoid creating tensions that could last year-round.

Have a Friendly Conversation

There’s no reason to rapidly escalate immediately, especially if your neighbor isn’t actually breaking any rules. They’re your neighbor, after all, and you don’t want to foster animosity that outlasts the holiday season.

Start by conversing with them without mentioning city rules or the HOA regulations. Explain that the lights are too bright late at night or their music is too loud, and it’s impacting your sleep schedule. If you’ve got a unique need (e.g., a new baby who isn’t sleeping well, a family member with epilepsy who can’t be near flashing lights, etc.), then gently explain that to your neighbor. If they see that your request is not a personal attack on them, they’re more likely to make the requested change.

Chances are, if your request is reasonable, your neighbor will be amenable to addressing it. This way, you’ve salvaged a decent, or at least amicable, relationship with them instead of starting an unpleasant conflict.

Inform Your Neighbor You’ll File a Complaint

If your neighbor is actually breaking the city or your HOA’s rules and they refuse to stop the violation, inform them of your intention to file a complaint. Just the threat of taking action may convince them to meet you in the middle.

File a Complaint

If all else fails, it’s time to take action. If you live in an HOA, the board will likely enforce decoration rules. Speak to them, and keep everything in writing so you have documentation just in case. Alternatively, you can call the city’s code enforcement to resolve the issue (find the number on your city’s official website).

Ideally, it won’t come to this, and you and your neighbor can find common ground in the holiday spirit!

Best Way to Incorporate a Desk Into Your Living Area https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-incorporate-a-desk-into-your-living-room-area/ Mon, 07 Oct 2024 18:45:53 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=638656 A dedicated workspace is a must when working from home. We asked the pros when having a desk in your living room is appropriate and how best to do it.

The post Best Way to Incorporate a Desk Into Your Living Area appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Remote work is on the rise. If you don’t have a spare room to transform, you might be considering other small home office solutions. One option is to incorporate a desk into your living room.

We spoke to three interior designers to find out when desks in living rooms can work and their tips for keeping things cohesive, clutter-free and conducive to concentration.

Pros and Cons of Putting a Desk in the Living Room

Pros

Interior designer Malak Bellajdel explains that desks in living rooms can create a functional workspace without sacrificing an entire room. “This setup works well for apartments and smaller homes,” she says.

Interior designer Angie Kreller says a desk in a living room rather than a bedroom office could enhance your productivity. You won’t be so tempted to lie down and take a break when you shouldn’t, and it means your bedroom remains a relaxing retreat. Plus, you don’t have to worry about your unmade bed showing on work video calls.

Cons

Bellajdel says there are times when a desk in a living room isn’t ideal. “If a client has small children or pets that could make it difficult to maintain a professional workspace, I’d suggest they reconsider,” she says. “You also have to think about aesthetics. If a client has a very specific design vision for their living space, a desk could disrupt that visual flow.”

Interior designer Leslie Dapper isn’t a fan of desks in living rooms. “I found that not only can it become filled with paperwork and files, it’s not always conducive to productivity,” she says. “There are many opportunities for distractions, and when it’s time to relax and use your living room for its purpose, it becomes hard to distinguish between the two spaces.”

Tips on How to Put a Desk in the Living Room

If you’ve decided to put a desk in your living room, consider these factors to successfully combine style and functionality.

Pick the perfect position

Bellajdel recommends thinking about the flow of the space. “The desk shouldn’t be in the way of any pathways or create awkward corners,” she says. Tucking a desk into a nook or using the space under your stairs is a creative way to incorporate a home office without it interfering with the rest of the room.

You also need adequate room to position your workspace ergonomically. A cramped desk and office chair can lead to problems with posture.

If you subscribe to the calming and harmonious energy principles of Feng Shu for your home, avoid sitting at a desk that faces the wall with your back to a doorway. The ideal commanding position would be somewhere you can see the door, but not directly in line with it. When facing a wall is the only choice, try expanding your view with a mirror.

Create a cohesive design

Keller recommends ensuring the desk style complements the rest of your living room design. “You want the aesthetic you’re going for to be cohesive and look like it belongs,” she says. “This will make the desk look less like a workstation and more like a deliberate ‘accessory’ to the space.”

Good lighting is key

“Try to position your desk near a window,” Balleajdel says. “Natural light is great for productivity, and it also helps the desk area feel like a natural part of the room.”

However, you don’t necessarily want to have your seat directly in front of the window. Sometimes, looking outside can be a distraction and cause issues with glare and privacy.

Use storage wisely

“If the living room is meant to be a true relaxation zone, some people have a hard time unwinding when work materials are visible,” Bellajdel says. Integrating smart home office organization solutions like a desk with drawers or discreet baskets on overhead bookshelves keeps the space clear of clutter.

You don’t need to opt for a full desk setup

If you’re struggling to envisage how to incorporate a large desk into a compact living room or you don’t want to be reminded of work at the end of a long day, don’t worry. “So much of what we do in terms of work now can be done on a laptop, so a full desk setup can sometimes feel unnecessary,” Dapper says.

A discreet, adjustable-height standing desk for small spaces is easy to tuck away in a closet at the end of the working day. A fold-down wall-mounted desk platform is another practical alternative.

Every house has numbers so people and the post can find you. Have you noticed how many people DON’T give their house numbers a DIY creative consideration? Most are satisfied with the numbers the house had from the minute they walked in. For this project, I pondered how a set of numbers on the front of your home can set the stage for what lies beyond the door. From a technical perspective, I designed this project so all of you can say, “I can do that!” Still, from a design perspective, I want the modern house numbers to boost the curb appeal and speak to the people walking up the door for the first time with a “wow,” all while giving it a cool, modern vibe.

Where To Put House Numbers

Your house number should be displayed at eye level or higher in a location where they are easily visible from the road and free of obstructions, such as tree branches. It is recommended that you use contrasting colors or place them near a well-lit area so they are easily visible in low light conditions. Use bigger numbers the further away your home is from the road.

G2Flower box face trim3/4″ x 1-1/2″ x 7-1/2″

Overall dimensions: 41-1/2″H x 7-1/2″W x 8-1/4″D

Stain the trim

Stain the trim pieces for the panel and flower box (D, E, F, and G) in a contrasting darker color.

Set the stained pieces aside and allow them to dry while you proceed to the next step. Touch up any exposed ends after the number panel is put together and framed.

To avoid staining the natural-colored wood pieces (A, B, and C) with your fingerprints while you put the piece together, you MUST ensure the dark wood stain is dry before you start to handle it. Also, using oil-based stain will give your wood even more longevity when exposed to the elements.

Determine the panel size

Our address has four numbers, but yours may be different. Adjust the panel size accordingly by laying out the numbers on a scrap piece of wood or cardboard. Think about the additional panel space you will want above, below, and on the sides of the numbers. Consider the 5-1/2-in. flower box and the plants that will need room to grow into the layout. When you have determined the size of your main panel (A) cut it.

Use the manufacturer’s template to align and drill the holes for the house number standoffs in the cut panel (A). Each number may have a different width dimension but are usually all the same height.

For vertical placement, find the center of the board, determine where you want the numbers to start and work your way down, laying out the numbers and drilling the screw holes. ALWAYS test fit your numbers before drilling holes. It is much easier to adjust the placement before drilling than to have to hide and repair a misplaced screw hole. Just drill the holes for your numbers in this step. We’ll attach them later.

Build the flower box

Use wood glue and brad nails to assemble the three-sided flower box out of the flower box sides (B) and flower box bottom (C).

Drill drain hole

Drill a 1/2-in. hole in the center of the flower box bottom (C) to allow for water drainage once the plants are in. This will prevent the wood and roots of the plants from rotting.

How To Install Modern House Numbers For Curb Appeal Flair Tfh Housenumb 071124 Ef Step 005

Attach the flower box to the main panel

From the back of the main panel (A) attach the flower box with wood glue, brad nails, and 1-1/2-in. screws. Pre-drill and countersink the holes so the back of the main panel (A) can sit flush when installed. Be sure to use screws instead of just nails to give the box ample strength to support the plant and dirt.

How To Install Modern House Numbers For Curb Appeal Flair Tfh Housenumb 071124 Ef Step 006 V1

Trim out the panel

Trim out the main panel (A) by nailing on the panel side trim (D) and panel top/bottom trim (E). Nail the panel trim pieces so that the back edge is flush to the back edge of the main panel (A). This will leave a 3/4-in. overhang around the numbers, making it look like a shadow box, and will allow you to hang the whole unit flush on the wall.

When the panel trim is attached, glue and nail on the side trim (F) and face trim (G) of the flower box.

How To Install Modern House Numbers For Curb Appeal Flair Tfh Housenumb 071124 Ef Step 006 V2

Seal the project

Apply at least two coats of spar varnish to every side of the entire unit, including the back of the main panel and the inside of the flower box.

How To Install Modern House Numbers For Curb Appeal Flair Tfh Housenumb 071124 Ef Step 010 V2

Attach the house numbers

Attach the house numbers by screwing them onto the main panel (A) from the backside. Use a mallet to ensure the numbers are fully seated on the panel. Countersink all the screw heads so that the back of the panel remains flat.

How To Install Modern House Numbers For Curb Appeal Flair Tfh Housenumb 071124 Ef Step 011 V1

Attach the aluminum cleat on panel

To hang this project, we used aluminum French cleat picture hangers, also known as z-clips. Z-clips are designed to marry into each other. Place one with the lip down on the back panel of your house number panel and one with the lip up at the location on your home where you’d like the panel to hang.

To balance the weight of the panel and flower box, we attached the panel side of the cleat three inches down from the top of the main panel (A) using 1/2-in. screws. Use a Speed square to make sure it is attached square on the panel.

Attach the aluminum cleat on panel

Attach the aluminum cleat on house

Slide the loose house-side z-clip so that it marries with the attached z-clip on the back of the house numbers panel and get a measurement from the top of the house numbers panel to the bottom of the loose z-clip. Ours was 6-7/8-in. inches: 3-3/4-in. (the gap above the panel-side z-clip w/ top trim) + 3-1/8-in. (the combined height of the married z-clips).

Then, determine the desired location and height on your house. Install the z-clip on your house centered behind the location of your panel, with the lip facing up and the bottom of the z-clip 6-7/8-in. (or whatever your measurement from above comes out to) lower than the desired height. Use a level to ensure the panel will hang level.

If you install it directly into wood, secure it with screws. If you are installing into a hollow wall, brick, or stone, use the appropriate anchor to secure the cleat with screws.

Once the cleat system has been secured, do a test hanging of the panel before you fill the flower box with dirt and plants. Maneuvering the whole numbers panel unit when empty will be much easier and lighter. Once you’re satisfied with the placement, move on to planting.

Attach the aluminum cleat on house

Prep flower box

To protect the flower box wood from too much exposure to moisture, line it with a plastic liner made out of a sandwich bag or plastic sheeting. Be sure to poke a hole through the plastic to expose the drainage hole. Then, line the flower box with a small piece of landscape fabric over the plastic liner. Leave the weed barrier intact over the drain hole. Water will drain, and dirt will stay in the flower box.

How To Install Modern House Numbers For Curb Appeal Flair Tfh Housenumb 071124 Ef Step 016 017

Plant flower box

Once you are satisfied with the placement of the panel and flower box, add potting soil and plants. Plant it hanging or on the ground, whichever feels easiest for you. The panel will gain considerable weight once dirt and plants are in place. You may also consider simply dropping in the plant already in its plastic pot. However, still line it with plastic and place some landscape fabric to further protect the wood and the plant.

FAQ

Do house numbers come in different styles and sizes?

House numbers can be purchased in various styles and finishes. House numbers may also be purchased so they sit flush or raised on standoffs. You may also find house numbers with built-in solar lighting, making numbers seen at night.

How do I install house numbers on siding?

Under the siding, your house still has a façade that has been covered over. To secure numbers over siding. Decide placement and drill through the siding to determine if you have wood or brick to screw into to and proceed according to the material. The big key is sealing around the screw you install for the house numbers. Use a dab of caulk in the color of your siding around the screw holes to prevent moisture from penetrating through the holes. Consider using numbers on stand-offs if your siding is on different levels where flush numbers may be challenging.
