Keeping the dining area clean is important, whether it’s a formal dining room or space near an open kitchen. After all, it’s the go-to spot for eating and entertaining! Here’s how to make sure it’s spotless.

Dining Room Cleaning Tips

Like any other room in the house, the dining room can’t be cleaned if it’s full of stuff. Clear off any clutter from the table and other surfaces before you bring out the cleaners and rags. And remember to clean from top to bottom, because crumbs, dust and debris will inevitably fall to the floor as you work, i.e. dust before you vacuum. Start with dusting the ceiling fixture and leave the floor for last.

Dining Room Cleaning Tools

The right products and tools make all the difference when cleaning your dining room. Here’s what to keep in a well-stocked cleaning toolkit:

  • Microfiber Cleaning Cloths: Use microfiber cloths to eliminate dust and shine surfaces without leaving lint behind.
  • Dish Soap: Just a few drops of dish soap is powerful yet gentle enough for cleaning the dining room table.
  • Vacuum: Invest in a good vacuum with attachments for dusting and cleaning the floor.
  • Broom: Use a broom to keep the endless crumbs and food debris under control.
  • Carpet Spot Cleaner: This will eliminate stains on the dining room rug. It also works on dining chair upholstery.

Dust the Dining Room Light Fixture

  • Give the light fixture a quick wipe with a dry microfiber cloth to remove dust.
  • Spray Windex on a cloth to wipe away any remaining smudges or spots.

Clean Your Dining Room Table & Chairs

  • Mix hot water a few drops of dish soap in a large bowl or bucket.
  • Dip a microfiber cloth in the cleaning mixture, wring well and wipe the table and chairs from top to bottom.
  • Wrap the edge of a butter knife in the microfiber cloth to clean tight areas and crevices.
  • For upholstered dining room chairs, vacuum the seats first. Then wipe with a microfiber cloth dipped in soapy water.
  • For stubborn upholstery stains, mix 1 cup hydrogen peroxide and 1 teaspoon of dish soap in a spray bottle. Shake well, spray on the stain and let sit for a moment before wiping clean.
  • If you notice a water stain on your wood table, mix equal parts vinegar and olive oil. Use a microfiber cloth to apply the mixture to the water stain, wiping in the direction of the wood grain until the stain is gone.

Clean Walls and Wall Decor

  • Get rid of any scuff marks on the wall.
  • Wipe down all the walls and baseboards with a microfiber cloth and a mixture of vinegar, water and a few drops of dish soap.
  • Use the same cloth and mixture to gently wipe the tops of picture frames and other wall decor where dust likes to settle.

Dust Other Dining Room Furniture

  • If you have a sideboard or other furniture in the room, dust each surface with a damp microfiber cloth (microfiber traps dust rather than just moving it around).
  • Use the same cloth to wipe down lamps and accessories.

Clean the Dining Room Floor

  • Sweep the entire floor or use a hard-surface vacuum. Don’t miss the corners of the room and under the table and chairs where crumbs like to gather.
  • If you have a dining room rug, vacuum it thoroughly and spot clean with carpet cleaner.
  • Mop the floor with your favorite cleaner, following all manufacturer instructions. Or, make a natural solution by mixing a cup of white vinegar with a gallon of warm water.
  • To clean wood floors, use a hardwood floor cleaner.

Daily Dining Room Cleaning Tasks

The dining room can get messy, especially if you have kids! Tackle these small tasks every day to keep the space tidy, and to ensure your weekly cleaning routine is more manageable.

  • Clear dishes after each meal and wipe down the table.
  • Quickly wipe down the chairs every night after dinner.
  • Remove any clutter that belongs in other rooms of the house.
  • Sweep the floor every night (but save the mopping for your weekly cleaning day).

How to Deep-Clean Your Dining Room

These dining room cleaning tasks can be done less often, maybe during fall cleaning or spring cleaning.

  • Disinfect light switches and outlets.
  • Wipe down the inside of any storage furniture, like the buffet.
  • Remove curtains and launder.
  • Condition your wood furniture. Make your own natural furniture polish by combining 2 parts olive oil with 1 part lemon juice. Apply in a circular motion with a microfiber cloth.
  • Clean silverware with this hack using aluminum foil, baking soda and salt. A good time to do this is November, before the holidays.

Making a room darker is a guaranteed way to give it instant 'wow' factor!

A bed with layered bedding sits in a stylish room. Soft lighting and decor create a cozy atmosphere, complemented by furniture and a dark wall.

Give Bold a Try

When it comes to choosing a paint color, it’s OK to break the rules. Making a room darker is a guaranteed way to give it instant “wow factor.” Try using a bold dark hue in the bedroom or a bright, sunny yellow in the living room.

A cozy living room features a blue chair, light wooden sofa, and a coffee table. Wall art adds character against a bright, minimalist background.

Follow the 10-30-60 Rule

Once you have your color scheme decided, you’ll need to decide how they will work together. This is where the 10-30-60 rule comes into play. Choose a dominant color which you’ll use for 60 percent of the space, a secondary shade (30 percent) and an accent color (10 percent). Dominant colors are often applied on walls and floor coverings. Secondary colors work well on furniture and the accent color is reserved for accessories such as throw pillows, a flower vase or a lamp shade. Try using copper in your decor as an accent.

A comfortable sofa with decorative pillows sits beside a woven coffee table, adorned with tea and snacks, against a stylishly painted wall with framed art.

Form and Function

When choosing furniture, consider both form and function. Choose a piece for the entryway that is not only visually appealing, but has drawers to store your car keys and the dog leash. If you don’t like clutter in the living room, look for tables where you can store remotes, magazines and odds and ends.

A blue couch rests against a light blue wall, with a wooden coffee table in front. A book lies open on the table, next to a closed book.

Buy Things You Love

Before you make a purchase, ask yourself if it’s a piece you’ll love years from now. If you answer “yes,” go ahead and buy it, whether it’s a bold blue couch, a lamp or a new rug. Regardless of trends or rules, don’t be afraid to invest in pieces you love.

A modern living room features a sofa and two ottomans, with a coffee table and vibrant striped rug. Shelves and cabinets line the wall.

Choose the Right Rug

Rugs can be expensive, so it’s important to choose the right size for your space. It can be tempting to purchase a rug in a design you love even though the rug is too small—but don’t! Make sure at least part of your rug can be placed under some of your furniture or it will make the room look uneven.

A cozy living room features a gray sofa with colorful pillows, a white coffee table with candles, and warm lights adorning the walls, creating a relaxed atmosphere.

Mix Textures

Don’t be afraid to mix textures in a room. Try adding a wicker chair to the living room along with some metal fixtures. Or add a brass lamp along with some plants to add a pop of green.

A woman holds a hammer as she adjusts a framed painting on a light-colored wall, surrounded by other framed art.

Know the Right Way to Hang Artwork

Before you start putting nails in the wall to hang your artwork, do a little prep work. Most art looks best hung at eye level (between 57 and 60 inches). Once you find the correct level, sketch out a grid on paper before you start pounding in nails.

Three white vases display dried branches against a bright blue wall, set on a wooden floor with a textured surface.

Stick to the Rule of Threes

The rule of threes is a classic design concept that says odd-numbered groupings create more visual interest than even numbers. Try adding three throw pillows or group a set of three vases in varying sizes.

Colorful, hand-painted bowls arranged in a grid, displaying various intricate designs against a striped background, showcasing vibrant artistry and craftsmanship.

Get Quirky with Accessories

Even the most conservative designer should get quirky every now and then. Make a statement with an unusual vase or a decorative bowl in a bold design or color. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to keep yourself in check when in comes to over decorating.

A beige couch adorned with patterned pillows sits under a wall lamp, alongside decorative objects and framed art, creating a cozy living space.

Add Layers of Light

A single, overhead light can make a room look flat. Instead, layer light sources. Try adding sconces or put a fun lamp in the corner to add a soft glow.

A woman kneels on a wooden floor, measuring with a tape, while giving a thumbs-up to a smiling man nearby, in a well-lit interior space.

Don’t Forget to Measure

Before you purchase that new couch or bookcase, make sure you measure. If your furniture is too big or too small, it can make your space look uneven. Before you buy furniture, map out where you’ll place large items so there aren’t any surprises.

What to Look for When Shopping for Accent Chairs

Here are some important factors to keep in mind as you continue your search for the perfect accent chair(s):

Low-Profile and Armless Construction

Armless chairs, such as slipper chairs, are popular for small spaces, as they typically have a slimmer profile. These chairs maximize seating while minimizing visual bulk, making a room feel less cluttered. That said, plenty of accent chairs with arms are on the narrower, space-saving side of the spectrum. Luckily, you can always check the dimensions of a given accent chair before you buy to ensure it will fit in your designated space.

Swivel Capabilities

Accent chairs are often placed in tight spots that can be hard to get out of or move from. If that sounds like your plan, you may want to opt for an accent chair that has the ability to swivel. This will make getting in and out of the seat easier, as you can turn the chair without actually moving it. Furthermore, it increases the chair’s versatility in your space, as it can be turned to face any direction, which makes it an excellent feature, especially for smaller households. Swivel chairs also come in various designs that fit modern and traditional aesthetics, which could provide more style variety.

Durable Materials

Especially in smaller homes and/or high-traffic areas of your home, the durability of your chair’s fabric (and how easy it is to clean) is of the utmost importance. Canvas is one of the more popular materials, but it offers good durability and is relatively easy to clean (the same goes for its cousin, linen). Leather, similarly, is naturally tough and resistant to water and stains. Softer fabrics like velvet or suede look great, but they tend to be a little more delicate and prone to damage, which is worth considering when shopping.

If you live in a pet-friendly household, you may want to consider looking specifically for accent chairs with scratch-resistant materials or removable, washable covers. Scratch-resistant fabrics and materials will ensure your furry friends won’t accidentally cause any undue damage, and removable, washable covers will allow you to clean your accent chair more easily if it gets a little dingy and dirty from those four-legged friends.

Additional Features

To maximize your space, you may want to consider the additional features an accent chair offers. For instance, some ottomans double as storage, doubling their functionality and allowing you to stash away other items, like throw blankets or board games. Similarly, some chairs can actually convert into lounges or beds, which is a great option for relaxation or if you’re trying to find an extra place for your guests to take a respite.

FAQ

What is an accent chair?

At their core, accent chairs are just chairs. The big difference is that they add a bit of stylistic flair to a room. Typically, they’re not a part of a set. Rather, they’re designed to stand out and be a little different from your other furniture.

Do you need one or two accent chairs?

You can have as many or as few accent chairs as you want or can fit; it all depends on your personal preferences and the space you have.

Where should accent chairs be placed in a living room?

Usually, accent chairs are placed in positions that oppose your other furniture or in otherwise unused spaces. Some of the more popular places to put an accent chair include (but are not limited to) beside your coffee table, next to a fireplace or bookshelf, in a corner, etc. But again, you can put them wherever you want—it’s your home, after all.

What to Consider When Buying Dining Tables for a Small Space

Here are key ideas to look for when selecting a new dining table.

Material

When choosing a dining table for a small space, durability is crucial. Some materials, like glass or lightweight metals, may not withstand frequent use, so it’s essential to weigh the pros and cons of various options:

  • Wood: Wood offers a classic, sturdy look and is highly durable. Solid wood tables can handle frequent use but may be heavy and require regular maintenance to prevent scratches or water damage.
  • Metal: Metal tables are lightweight and easy to move, making them ideal for small spaces. They are sleek and low-maintenance, though they can feel cold and might scratch floors or dent over time.
  • Glass: Glass tables create an open, airy feel in tight spaces but are more prone to chips, scratches and fingerprints. They require regular cleaning to maintain their appearance.
  • Marble: Marble tables are elegant and heat-resistant, offering a timeless aesthetic. However, they are very heavy, often expensive, and require careful maintenance to avoid staining and etching.
  • Laminate: Laminate tables are affordable, lightweight and easy to clean. While they offer various styles, they are less durable and may not last as long as other materials.

Expandable and Convertible Options

Expandable and convertible tables are ideal for small spaces, offering the flexibility to adjust your dining area as needed. Options like drop-leaf tables or tables with fold-out extensions maximize space when not in use and expand when you have guests or need extra room. Here are some popular choices:

  • Drop-Leaf Tables: With hinged sections that fold down to reduce the footprint, drop-leaf tables are perfect for compact spaces where additional seating is only occasionally needed. Simply raise the leaf to create extra surface area.
  • Extendable Tables: These tables come with built-in or separate leaves that can be added or removed to adjust the size. Some designs feature fold-out mechanisms, easily transforming a compact table into a larger dining surface.
  • Convertible Tables: Convertible tables can switch between functions, such as a coffee table that raises to dining height or a console table that unfolds into a dining table. These versatile pieces work well in studio apartments or open floor plans where space-saving is essential.

Integrated Storage

In small spaces, tables with built-in storage maximize functionality by combining dining and storage in one piece. Options like drawers, shelves or hidden compartments are especially useful in compact kitchens with limited storage.

  • Drawers keep essentials like utensils and linens within reach, reducing tabletop clutter.
  • Shelves beneath the tabletop offer space for cookbooks, appliances or decor, maximizing vertical space and accessibility.
  • Hidden Compartments provide discreet storage for items like placemats and coasters, maintaining a tidy look without sacrificing space.

Multi-Functionality for Dual-Purpose Rooms

Multi-functional tables are essential in small apartments or studios. They can serve as dining tables, home office desks or kitchen prep areas. These adaptable pieces maximize utility without clutter, making them ideal for dual-purpose rooms.

A sturdy dining table can double as a work desk, while a durable kitchen table can switch between meal prep and dining. Choosing tables that fulfill multiple roles maximizes limited space and supports a flexible, dynamic living environment.

Space-Saving Seating

Space-saving seating is essential for compact dining areas. Benches that tuck under the table or stackable stools are ideal, as they can be easily stored when not in use. Lightweight or foldable chairs also add flexibility, allowing you to move them out of the way to prevent overcrowding. Choosing seating solutions that complement small tables provides a well-rounded approach to furnishing small kitchens or dining areas, ensuring that seating remains functional without taking up unnecessary space.

FAQ

What shape dining table is best for small space?

Circular or round dining tables work well in small spaces. They allow for easier movement around the table and occupy less space than rectangular or square tables.

What type of table is best for a small kitchen?

A bistro table is a great choice for a compact kitchen. These small, round tables typically seat two and can fit neatly into a corner. Pairing a bistro table with a corner bench can save additional space.

What is the best table for a small square room?

Round tables are ideal for small square rooms. Without corners, a circular table offers more room and a more intimate dining experience than a square table.
